26" Uni for commuting and sometimes muni

    Hi all,
    It's been a few years since posting here or riding, and the market
    seems for unis seems to have really exploded. My beloved mountain bike
    was stolen last night, so I'm looking for a 26" uni, mainly for
    commuting 3 miles to work in Boston (which means mainly sidewalks
    because the streets are scary). I also used to love muni-ing, so I'd
    like to get back into that, but it's a secondary thing to the
    commuting. My budget is about $350, preferably closer to $300, so at
    the moment I'm thinking of getting the Nimbus 26" Muni

    and swapping out the tyre for a thinner slick for commuting.

    Other options I've considered are the 26" Yuni and the Sem XL with
    Mammoth Rim and Kovachi wheel.

    Any opinions on the Nimbus, and how it will go as a commuter? How does
    it compare to the Yuni and Sem XL? BTW, I'm not considering 28/29"
    options because I used to have a 28" DM and found it too difficult to
    stop in tight situations (Boston has streets of death, so I need to be
    able to stop on a dime).

    Nimbus 26 is an excellent machine. I commute regularly on mine, but
    it's 9 miles each way cross-country rather than roads. I use 150mm
    cranks, but you could probably use shorter ones on road if you want
    more speed (although from what you said it's probably too crowded for
    speed to be an issue). The Schwalbe Big Apple is considered a good
    road tyre (most people use them on 29ers, but I think they do a 26"
    version).
    A 29er will be very similar but just a tiny bit quicker.
    If you want to do occasional muni, I'd say go with the 26 and swap the
    tyres when you go muniing.

    Yeah, what he said.

    I have got a nimbus 26 and they are fantastic. I commute on mine almost
    daily with a Maxxis Hookworm tyre and 125mm cranks which for my commute
    are a bit on the long side but give me plenty of control.

    Off road it is great as there are loads of 26" tryes to choose from and
    it rolls much more smoothly over bumps than a 24 (I do have a 24 but
    prefer my 26)

    All in all a good uni for what you say you want. a 29er woud be another
    option but the tyre range is not as great and if you have a 3" tyre on
    the 26 then you are only an inch smaller in diameter than a 29er.

    Personally, if these were my parameters I would go for a 29er with the
    Nanoraptor 29x2.1" tire. The Nanoraptor is a fine tire for riding on
    roads and sidewalks, and it also performs well on easy MUni. No
    tire-swapping required. If you do want a 26", the Nimbus is fine.

    I was just thinking an off-road tyre would wear quickly if most of his
    riding will be on roads. My 3" muni tyre performs fine on the road
    sections of my commute, but you can almost see the trail of money left
    behind as the spikes wear down. Most of my route is off-road, but if
    it were mostly road I'd use a road tyre. It sounded to me as if he was
    only planning on doing very occasional muni.

    I agree that you don't want to run a real MUni tire on pavement for any
    length of time. The NanoRaptor is only lightly treaded and does just
    fine on roads, and somewhat better than the Big Apple off-road. I
    would definitely use the Big Apple if I were only planning to ride on
    roads, but if I were looking for a road machine which could also do
    MUni in loose terrain, I'd compromise with the NanoRaptor. (There are
    knobbier 29er tires, but I think they suffer more from poor performance
    on roads).
