26" 144 spoke wheels

  1. Hi

    Just purchased a beach cruiser bike, I like it but its has the standard
    wheels on, Ive been trying to find a UK source for 26" 144 spoke wheels?
    online will be fine, ive found many sources in the US but am
    trying to avoid the high shipping and import duty.

    Yeah I was serious!

    Its not about the roughness of the terrain ill be using or the strength
    144 spokers have its the look i want. They are fairly popular in the USA

    Do you *really* mean 144 spokes? I think it would be impossible to build
    such a wheel. That would be one spoke every 0.56 inches all round the
    rim, and you couldn't get a spoke key in.

    I'd suggest that you import them yourself. Web and credit card, it's
    not that hard to do.

    I have seen them for sale in the UK, but only on complete bikes. As I
    think they were imported pretty much as a one-off, then that probably
    cost nearly as much wholesale as your one-off did.

    If you know other people that might be interested in this low-rider
    look, then you might be able to sell a few more sets. It might be
    worth raising this issue with the US seller, and seeing if they'll
    offer you some discount on a shop-window set, in the hope of shifting
    more sets later.

    You're likely to get stung for VAT and import duty on receipt. It's
    worth making it clear to the shipper that this will be calculated on
    the declared value and can they please exclude the shipping charges
    from that total. There's no sense in paying more than you need to.

    Tension the first 36 properly, and vaguely tension the others, which are
    only for decoration, just with a screwdriver from the outside of the rim
    using the slot in the nipple? (You could maybe even do 72 properly, or 48
    doing every third one if 72 is too crowded).

    (I vaguely remember hearing that Jaguar moved to solid wheels because an
    E-type needed more spokes on a wire wheel than would fit.

    I don't think interlacing is worth the trouble in 3-leading-3-trailing.

    To quote from Jobst Brandt's book, "Interlaced spokes take up each
    others slack during severe radial loading and reduce the chance of
    spokes becoming loose." How important that is depends on the spoke
    count, your weight, your riding habits, whether it's a dished wheel,
    and so on. I haven't had a problem with spokes going slack in a
    non-interlaced 36-spoke front wheel.

    I Don't know why, but I built a set of wheels three leading three trailing
    following an even slightly more interlaced picture at:

    Building was fairly easy, took me about two hours to do the front and
    about an hour to do the back. I don't know how hard it would be to
    replace a spoke but so far I have around 3000 incident free miles on
    front and rear and I weigh about 1050 newtons mass.

    OK, that site raises another question. On this page
    <URL:http://www.stormpages.com/spokeanwheel/lacingsr.htm> the author
    criticises the standard half-radial lacing of rear wheels (i.e. with
    the radial lacing on the non-drive side) and instead recommends
    half-radial lacing with the radial lacing on the drive side. I can sort
    of see the logic of this in terms of the trigonometry and the tensions
    in the spokes.

    So why do most half-radials not follow this pattern? Is there a problem
    with transmitting torque along the length of the hub? What are the
    countervailing arguments?

    The problem is indeed one of transmitting torque through the hub. In
    addition to "wind-up" in the spokes, you would also suffer wind-up in
    the hub body. Given that it seems a well-built wheel will not fail until
    it suffers some extreme conditions, I would have though that the
    proposed half-radial design wouldn't help a great deal, and could make
    things worse.

    BTW, as far as I'm aware, the half-radial design is basically an image
    thing. I don't imagine that there is any practical difference in
    strength or rigidity over a full 2X or 3X wheel.
