25mm tire recommendations?

I kind of hoped that was the case, but someone measured the 23's for
me, and reported that they are indeed 23.

Now I have also gotten reports that some Michelin 25's are 25, while
others are 28!

I just measured Michelin Pro2Race 700x23: 23 mm; Michelin Pro2Race
700x25: 26.5 mm.

Yup, go with the Fasgrip SL K. It's a great tire and comes in nice and
close to it's stated dimensions.

All smooth. No tread pattern anywhere. I ride them and
like them very much for the feel and the traction.

Vittoria makes clincher tires at 220 tpi and 290 tpi.

I ride Vittoria Open Pro CX and Vredestein TriComps. For comfort at high
pressure the Vredesteins are great and available in 23-25-28 if you hunt.
130 PSI rolls like crazy and feels and sounds like a Clement Seta. The CX
rolls maybe a bit better and is maybe a bit tougher, but the TC's are more
comfortable.

I too use Avocet Fasgrip 700x25 tires, both the older Japanese-made,
black/tan sidewall Fasgrip Road 30 and the newer Korean-made, all black Road
25s. Both have excellent durability, traction, reliability and low rolling
resistance. Get some, you'll like it!

What is the diff from a rider's view of different tpi? Yes, I'm new to
this sport. -paul

My last Avocet 25's the rear only lasted 1500 miles or so. Not at all
like I remembered the old ones lasting.

Nevertheless I had bought 4 of them so just put on a new set, no real
data yet.

Otherwise a great tire.

I also use the original Conti Grand Prix which is still made in Germany
and can be had for less than the Avocet if you buy from the right
source. It is not 25mm wide, but I think it is the same rolling
diameter of the Avocets... in other words still can take the same bumps
and rocks without issue. On these, I get over 3000 miles on a rear tire.

The side walls are largely responsible for shock
absorption (often called compliance), and the amount of
rolling resistance. (Rolling resistance is also increased
as the amount of tread pattern increases.) When the side
walls are constructed from many small threads contrasted
with fewer large threads, the side walls are thinner, it
takes less force to bend the side wall, and therefore the
tire eats up less power as it rolls down the road, the
side wall flexing as it gets squished against the road.
Likewise when the tire rolls over cracks, lines, pebbles,
etc. the side walls flex more easily and transmit less of
the shock to the tire rim.

I've never seen Fortezzas bigger than 25mm, and even those are skinny for
their nominal width -- more like most 23s.

I've been riding Fortezzas lately and I like them well enough, but they
wear quickly for me, and other tires have a better ride. It'll be "on
sale" Michelin Carbons for me this time -- practically as fast as the Pro2
Race but a lot more durable and cheaper. Avocets would be a good choice
too, but they're never on sale.

www.biketiresdirect.com seems to be a good source for tires, especially
since they stock non-standard widths for the same reasonable prices, and
have a flat $5 shipping charge.

Unless you really can't fit them in your frame and brakes, get the
fattest ones you can. All else being equal, the rolling resistance should
be even better. Unless you can sustain 25mph+ the aerodynamics won't
matter, and we all know an extra ounce or two per wheel is meaningless.

Vittorias have a great ride, and tend to run large. They're too expensive
for me though.

It's pretty rare for a frame to be that narrow. How much clearance do you

High tpi (threads per inch) ratings mean thinner, more flexible casings,
resulting in a smoother ride and lower rolling resistance.

Some manufacturers play tricks with tpi ratings though, so the ratings don't
always correspond. Also, some medium tpi casings are actually faster than
some high tpi ones.

The main difference between 23 and 25mm tires is that you can run the wider
tires at a lower air pressure without risking pinch flats. How much of a
difference you feel depends a lot on what is your current tire pressure.

Here's a repost of some tire test results from a European magazine.
The tires actually tested were probably 23mm, but it's a safe bet the
wider versions of the same tires would score similarly in relation to one
another.

I've used quite a few brands of tires but have mostly stuck with either
Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp or Michelin Pro (now Pro Race), both of which
I find to run true as labeled. With 23mm, I have approx 2-3mm clearance
on each side. I have tried mounting 25mm and it's a VERY close shave with
no allowance whatsoever for wobbles and a slightly-out-of-true wheel. A
friend of mine with the latest model Pinarello can't even take 23mm
without an uneasy conscience, so it's 20mm all the way for him. Not me, I
started with 20mm and I'm never going back there.
