I was speaking with a City of London cycle policeman on Thursday.
He told me a woeful tale of a cyclist at a red light.
They were targetting cyclists at red lights after a series of complaints by the public. The police were on their bikes with helmet mounted cameras at a set of lights when a cyclist approached. The cyclist slowed down, but did not look like stopping. The police shouted a warning to stop, but the cyclist continued over the stop line. A second warning was given, and the cyclist told that if he did not comply it would be court not a ticket, but seeing a gap in the traffic the cyclist went for it, deliberately ignoring the warnings.
The police radioed for support and gave chase. The cyclist was caught further down the road by colleagues.
The case went to court and the cyclist fined £250, plus costs.

Those coppers should have been in WSM this morning. The usual waiting to come out of Morrison's, the lights are green but there are *still* cars turning in against red lights. I reckon at least five must have gone through on red, with several more going through on amber when they could have stopped.
Oh no, I must have that wrong. It's only cycloids that jump red lights.

I was left with the feeling that the cyclist was being punished for his arrogance more than the offence of shooting a red light - but the policeman's accent was so difficult to comprehend that I didn't like to ask for more detail.
I suspect two charges - failing to stop at a red light and ignoring a police officer (or whatever the legal terms are).
- but the policeman's accent was so difficult to comprehend
Perhaps the RLJ was unable to understand the warnings!
