  1. I must need my head testing. One of my colleagues at work's persuaded
me to do the 210km ATB this year. OK, it didn't take _much_ persuading
    I suppose :-)

About the only thing that concerns me a bit is the hill climbing
component. The only hills I do on a regular basis are the little humps
on Blackburn Road between Wellington Road and Burwood Highway. Oh that
and what nutrition I should take with me.

Think I'll pop down to see my coach tomorrow :-D

Yay! The big boss came by my desk a week ago, and exclaimed "it's
closed!". Upon further eloboration, I found out the way the rest of
the university team was going, was closed (indeed, I knew it had been
for at least a month). But he just found out that the other way was
    still open, and signed up.

Come to BR on Sunday! 7:20, doncaster shopping center.

Euan, watch out what the guys pass off as 'nutrition' on a BR ride.. those
Smiths Gully muffins are a product of the devil I says!!

It would. I've heard that you Melburnians don't tackle hills very
    often :-)

    what HILLS !?!?!

its the Around the Bay.... about the biggest climb is the westgate 🙂 Do a few BR's though, that will give ya some good hill training if you are that worried... there are so many people on the day... you just follow people up the hills.

I say, I think I just found out how GPL is so much faster than us. He
    cheats.

How dare you go on a Bunch Ride, and not pig yourself full of muffins
    and other bakery goods.

Just because they are called 'forbidden' transitions does not mean
that they are forbidden. They are less allowed than allowed

sorely tempted however I estimate that it'd take me at least 100 minutes
to get to the start point. That means getting up at about five in the
    morning..on the sodding weekend!

Feh. I get up at 5:50 (and my usual wake time is 9:00, so you should
feel sorry for me 🙂, and I got up at 5:00 on saturday for the MBTC
ride (ooh boy, how the heck am I going to get up early enough to start
    the ATB at 5:00am?).

And it's only 3 times as far as I ride to get to the start. Consider
    it good practice 🙂

Hills? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

Forget about the hills and worry instead about the chance of wicked headwinds, rain and sleet! Of course, that might not happen... but you never know...

Nutrition? You're not racing - if you don't mind carrying a backpack or saddlebag, you can pack whatever you like for a picnic. As long as it's shelf-stable, try a couple of jam sandwiches, some powerbars, snakes, jelly beans, whatever you like. Just remember that it's a long time in the saddle and you can take regular rest stops to refuel. OTOH, if you're looking to break the record, you can look forward to taping some energy gels to the frame, energy bars in your pockets and some jelly beans.

IIRC (which could be a stretch), there isn't a 'start' as such. Back in 199? when I did ATB, people just milled about around 0530 and then gradually people decided to head off... no gun, no banner, just bunches taking off (for the clockwise direction). Keeping this in mind, if you live in the eastern suburbs and are taking on the clockwise route, just ride direct towards Frankston and join the route somewhere along the bay. The ride is long enough without tacking on extra distance!

Thats not a bad idea, it's put new light on my negative thoughts about this ride.

It would probably be longer in distance actually riding from the eastern suburbs but I would not have to fight the crowds which would make it safer. I could start a bit earlier to catch the first ferry over and maybe draft the faster riders or join a pack on the way home.

Yep, JayWoo and I ware stuck in the middle of it.. it took us about 5mins
to get enough forward momentum to clip in...

Those are bigger and steeper than just about anything you'll encounter on
Around the Bay. A bigger concern should be dealing with the inevitable
    headwinds for 80-90kms. Oh joy!

They're baby hills - no more than the blackburn Rd hills.

My advice, eat early, eat often, eat lots, and don't
start from the start, start somewhere else along the way -
the start is a huge disaster area.

Good point. Any advice on mitigating sweat rash in the delicate region?
