Hello ya'll, I am looking at getting into cycling on a road bike after riding a trek mountain bike all last year. Good fun, but I would like something more efficient. I found a guy about five hours from me selling a 2011 Trek Madone 3.1 for 1000 bucks. Is this a steal or just an average deal and I can wait till something locally comes available. In my exhaustive research I know actually trying the bike and fit are key, but what say you all to the bike and its value? I have seen nothing but rave reviews on this bike. I super stoked for spring, also my purpose is just getting started and riding a few centuries this year. I will buy some gator skins and use this as a commuter as well 4 miles to work and then a 15 mile scenic ride home every day. Look forward to some input. Thanks guys and gals.

I should add the alternative I am looking at is a Specialized Allez Sport 2012 for 740 before taxes. I know ultimately it comes down to the rider and not the bike. I guess I should add I am a fairly big guy at 280, looking to drop all this weight from riding. I lost 40 some pounds last year and put it all back on when I quit riding.

As to value of the Trek, check the 'Completed Listings' on eBay and that will give you a very good representation as to whether or not the price you've been offered is a good deal.
Being a bigger fellow, the Specialized (IMO) would be a better choice as the aluminum frame will be stiffer than the carbon framed Trek. It will also be comfortable enough for you too, but the Trek will feel softer.
Both are excellent bikes. -
Thats funny, I am in Spokane and would have to drive out your way to pick the bike up if I go that route. What do you mean by softer for someone who is a amateur? I have a feeling that this comes down to being new and carbon don't add up unless you have the money floating around to spend on it. I guess I might need to go with the cheaper deal being new, the Specialized in 2012 got great reviews for beginners and it is all local....

When I say softer, I'm meaning more flexible in the bottom bracket and more comfort in the overall feel of the bike of the Trek. Carbon frames have a way of insulating a rider from road surface imperfections much better than aluminum. You may or may not be able to distinguish the stiffness in the bottom bracket between the two, but if you're intent on doing some spirited riding down the road (pun intended) where you're out of the saddle you will realize what I mean.

My buddy is jealous, he is the one that got my amped about cycling and he is rocking and entry level bike. I made choice the mostly on comfort, being overweight and wanting to ride every local century means I will spend many an hour riding this bad boy!

If the $1,000 madone fits you correctly, I would grab it fast! I'm a bike snob, used to high end Italian bikes. Now, that I'm a single mom of three, my budget is more realistic. I just bought a madone 3.1 and love it. The geometry is great. It's a very comfortable ride while still being very responsive. I have read a lot of reviews on the madone. The only bad point about the bike is the uncomfortable seat. But, that is easily replacable.

Hello...I also live in spokane and I happen to be looking for a used road bike too.I am actually planning on selling my 2014 trek fx 7.4 carbon for a road bike.Anyway I happen to come across the same exact picture of the bike you have on your profile picture on craigslist.It has the same exact pic. I was just curious,are you the same one selling it?
