2005 XT reverse indexing

  1. Just had a bike put together and lo and behold the right side 9 speed
    shifter is in reverse from previous models!

    Is this a function of the shifter pod OR the derailleur?

    And, is this reversable or do I have to order a new part?

    You have a "rapid-rise" rear derailleur. You want a normal-rise derailleur.

    You might want to give it a shot. Some people prefer Rapid Rise ("Low
    Normal"😉 RDs.

    I heard somewhere, sometime, that 70% of people who use regular derailleurs
    are faster as a result. And they're more attractive to the opposite sex.
    Just a thought.

    Why does it give improved performance on downshifts? Is it because those
    downshifts, pulled by the spring instead of the cable, are more accurate?

    Shimano says it's because it prevents the rider from overshooting and
    trying to skip over a sprocket to shift two gears at once. They say
    this deprives you of the benefit of the Hyperglide ramps and gates.

    That may well be true as far as it goes, but it doesn't completely
    explain the effect.

    I first noticed this back in the early '60s with ancien Cyclo freewheels
    that didn't have any ramps or gates.

    It was quite noticeable when I replaced my old Benelux Mark VII with a
    Hurét Alvit.

    Overall, the Hurét improved shifting, but with the (high normal) Hurét,
    upshifts were smoother and easier than downshifts, while with the old
    (low normal) Benelux _downshifts_ were smoother and easier than upshifts.

    My guess is that it has to do with cable friction and stretch.
