2005 Giant OCR Zero

The Trek 1400 is all aluminium with carbon fork, the Giant has a carbon rear triangle (seat/chain stays) and fork. Other than that, you'll get Bontrager components on the Trek which are of high quality. The Bontrager Select wheels are a sturdy equivalent to the Shimano's on the Giant. The Trek is also a standard geometry, whereas the Giant has a compact geometry (sloping downtube). Without going into all the theoretical pros and cons, the best thing is to ride them both and decide for yourself.

As for the new Giant...this link summarises the differences between the 2006 and the 2005 model giant-bicycles.com030.000.000.aspOpen ↗. The Shimano 550 wheelset are a fair bit better than the predecessor, don't know much about the crankset, "Fast 23c tyres" sounds like marketing bullcrap and a new saddle isn't much to sing about. In summary, they've pumped out the same bike with a couple of minor upgrades. I wouldn't hang out for the 2006 if you can save some bucks on the 2005. Call some shops to see if they have surplus 2005 OCR1's and see how you go. Giant built so many of the suckers, there has to be a few left! Remember to ride the Trek though!

I was out looking at bikes with my brother over the weekend... are you in Melbourne ?? Freedom Machine in Port Melbourne, had the bikes you are talking about, they had the zero, the one and they also had the new Advanced, which is apparently the Team bike from last year

It gives the upgrade spec from 05 to 06. From what I could gather from the
guy at my LBS the main difference was a low weight bottom bracket in the 06
model.

I believe one of the biggest changes is the move to "compact" crank
set-up; it's now 50/36 compared with 52/39. Probably a good move for a
lot of people.

Definitely ride both the Trek and the Giant and then go with the one that
feels "right" after fitting properly. If the shop won't let you test ride,
go and find a shop that will. They're both good quality bikes, so fit and
comfort is going to be vastly more important than niggling differences in
hardware spec. This is the lesson I learned through not doing it. Overall
I'm happy with my OCR3 but the fact that my church fete sale fixie (~20 year
old Malvern Star) feels that much better to me demonstrates how important
fit is.

Definitely ride both the Trek and the Giant and then go with the one that

Having owned a bunch of convventional road bikes including a custom
bates and a bates tracky and a giant 1220 and still owning a early TCR1,
one of the really twitchy ones let me second this. The compacts are
different. They are way less different than they were but they still are
different. . Bike fit is the single most important variable.. the
Giants score well here as they are easy to get a good fit for better
than 90 % of people. (I think 95% now that they have more sizes) THe
second important variable is feel er how comfortable you feel on it.
Before you buy a compact just ride one and decide its ok.

This shop with 4 OCR zeros on special is in Tuggeranong (Canberra). It'll
probably cost you more to come up here and buy it than to shell out the
total cost down in Melbourne! Sorry.

I have a 2002 Trek 1400, it's been great, and has done a lot of km's.
I
got mine from Cycle Science in Mitcham, quite close to you in
Doncaster. I keep going back there, which is my vote for them as
a shop with a good rep.

Testride them both - preferably at high speed.

Also, do not be fooled into buying a bike for the groupset - buy the
best frame you can afford. Over time, you will replace the groupset
components as they wear out, but you're unlikely to replace the frame
unless you Dutchy it!

This should be in a FAQ ...
