Pretty impressive numbers. 205 car free days. Yeah Baby! Now if more
people did that. 3720 total bike miles, how many tires, chains,
cassettes etc, etc, etc? You didn't ride the unicycle for commuting?

I managed 1003 miles. 1/2 on road & 1/2 on trainer.
Must try harder next year.

My skillz were wanting in 05 (newbie me). That was then. I'm ordering

I don't know exactly how many miles I got in over the
past year, but they were all pretty good.
I figured out some fairly arcane routes in the 'burbs.
My knowledge of the city & environs (except Surrey and
Delta BC) may be approaching that of a veteran cab driver.
This year I did my first multi-modal trip via SkyTrain (in
order to escape from Surrey BC and return to civilization.)
No wipeouts, no injuries (to me, but I managed to kill a
bike frame.)
Some swag I found includes:
- 1 clip-on sunglasses thingie
- 1 cheapo ladies watch
- 1 braided gold wire hoop earing
- 1 $5 bill
- many AA cells that still have enough juice to power a blinkie
- a roll of electrical tape -- the /good/ stuff
Every day was car-free.
I still have yet to master the hills of New Westminster BC.
But I'm still building a repertoire of workarounds about them.
My bike tan is already fading. I'm looking forward to
next year.
cheers,
Tom

I could stay up on one of those. {pause} IN A PADDED FREAKING PHONE BOOTH

I still think the wildest pseudo "bike thing" I ever saw was a pair of
/mountain/ unicyclists clearing some pretty darned technical sections on the
trails up in Monterrey during a 24 hour event. Friggin' NUTS!
Wild, wild, wacky stuff...

I watched something on some cable channel with guys doing that I thought
these guys must have a few loose spokes or something, that is INSANE!

I don't know the final tally, but I've probably driven less than 30 days
in 2005. I simply moved to where I don't need a car for everyday life. I
rent one when I need to -- usually for long trips out of town.
Even renting 10-15 days a year is cheaper than owning the cheapest car.
Some will claim it isn't, but like most people they're probably not
honestly keeping track of all their automotive expenses.

On my road bike I probably do about that, or maybe a little more. But
that doesn't include the shopping/errands that I mostly do on my mountain
bike (which doesn't have a computer). I probably do 30-40 mi/week of
that, 9 months of the year.
I'd say that's one chain and 2 rear tires. It's very hilly around here,
and the pavement is rough, so it's hard on tires. I haven't replaced
either on the mountain bike in a couple of years. I don't go mountain
biking much anymore -- my recreational riding is mostly on the road
bike, as is most of my mileage.

Here's my annual human-powered milage:
11,000 miles per year on a bike (I try to do 30 miles daily and if I
slack off one day, I make up for it the next. This includes hard
workouts, transportation and shopping trips and sightseeing).
2,000 walking/hiking/climbing miles (average 6 miles a day).
1,000 running miles (average 3 miles a day).
1,000 Kayak paddling miles (10 miles twice a week).
3 brachiating miles (horizontal overhead ladder at a gym-----no vines or
tree branches involved).
01 miles walking on my hands (went 50 ft. to win a bet).
000. car miles.

I've done around 4500 kilometers (2700 miles) this year, despite not
having a bike until June and going bikeless for seven weeks in the
summer.
I don't keep track of my car free days. In an average post bike
purchase month there are probably three or four times that I catch
taxis (or moto taxis) and, no busses unless I'm doing long distance
travel. True long distance travel is usually by air. There have also
been two long distance boats.
When in the US I probably use a car (as a passenger, I still don't have
a license) every single day except the two weeks I go camping.
I've never been on a unicycle.
Well the year ain't over yet -- if I can do ~20 miles today and ~25
tomorrow (should be easy if the weather cooperates), I'll flip over
3,000 miles on my road bike since mid-February. Nothing like having an
arbitrary number to shoot for. :-)
Dunno how many miles on my MTB -- a combination of commuting and some
single-track forays probably gives me a few hundred miles for 2005. On
the trainer, I've got ~32 hours recorded since March, whatever that
works out to.

I rode over 3000 miles this year, which I'm pretty sure is a first for me. I
managed to work this fact into the conversation several times with family
members and co-workers this month, which may sound silly considering how
much more than this many others ride, but I can't help feeling pleased about
it.
In part, I'm happy about it because I was seriously ill in 2003-04. Cycling
is great for physical health, of course, but it also can be a big
psychological lift. Riding the equivalent of coast to coast is a good way to
say, "I'm back!"
My first driving this year (other than rentals while on business trips) was
Christmas Eve, but I relied often on other family members who drive, so that
doesn't mean much. I'm not particularly hostile to the automobile, even
though I don't enjoy driving one. It always seemed like the right tool for a
lot of jobs, like taking the family to visit Grandma and Grandpa on the farm
or bringing home a week's worth of groceries and a large bag of dog chow.
It's just too bad so many people insist on using it for jobs for which it is
unsuitable and unnecessary.

OK, good show. How is the trajectory, i.e., how does it compare to
last year?
No final stats until tomorrow, but my total mileage is right about 8200
right now, commuted 4-5 days/week on the bike except for the two weeks
after surgery. My wife has about 7980 miles at the moment, commuted 4
days a week most weeks. Not sure of car free days, but there are times
the car sits idle 7-14 days at a stretch.
Best miles of the year: the 500 from Bordeaux to Barcelona, including a
number of passes in the Pyrenees.

Very impressive numbers.
With one day to go, I'm at 5202 miles for the year, which is a new high for
me (previous best about 5080).
A similar best experience: just under 500 miles bicycling across southern
Utah in the fall.
At least one century in each month (below freezing, I can count a metric
100km; above freezing 100 miles).
What's really impressive is that it's both of you. Unfortunately, I've been
unable to get my spouse interested. (Better luck with the kids, who own two
bikes each.)
In September, 2004, I developed a heart condition known as atrial
fibrillation, which is pretty common, not fatal, but can sure slow you
down a bit. Your atria are in constant fibrillation, fluttering away
at about 400 beats per minute. Since the ventricles take their cues
from the atria, they boom away very irregularly at about 150-180 bpm
(not all the atrial signals make it through the system). This all
makes using a HRM sort of a joke. I found myself in AFib continuously
- many folks only have it periodically. The net effect is about a 70%
reduction in heart output.
So, you need to either 1) Control the rhythm and/or 2) control the bpm,
as that rate will eventually kill you. I tried electrocardioversion
twice and meds to control the rhythm and get it back into normal sinus
rhythm, and failed. Therefore, I had to use drugs all year long to
keep my quite irregular heart rate at about 80-100.
The problem is that the drugs further slow you down, and can, quite
literally, turn you further into a zombie. There you are - a 70% heart
output compounded by body slowing and energy sapping drugs.
I did not track my exact mileage for 2005 as I felt I would get very
depressed. However, I did keep a pretty good mental figuring as we
went along. I was able to build up to about 6 months of 130-140 miles
per week.
Then, August 23rd, 2005, I had a heart procedure called an ablation,
which solved the rhythm problem for me. However, you don't get all of
your heart output back right away - it takes some time for the atria to
return to full vigor. But, I have been getting more and more back in
shape. The procedure itself took me out of circulation about 3 weeks.
Wow, that was a long wind-up. Sorry.
Anyway, I figure I got in about 4,200 - 4,500 miles this year, which I
didn't think was 1/2 bad, considering all.
So, hopefully, next year will be another ball game!

No, not half bad at all. Best of luck staying healthy and happy in 2006.
Stay away from hospitals. Being in a hospital is, on a per hour basis, much
more dangerous than riding a bicycle. :-)
