Geoff - who's bike was it again?
hippy
Martin Vcelka - his most recognisable feature is a big frown becuase he
not only broke his frame and his disc, but also got a one month
suspension and a fine. (He's also the only guy in D grade with one
leg.)
There's a few different versions of what happened, as always.
Are you sure that Martin was the rider that copped the fine etc. From where
I was standing (on the track apron at the entrance to turn 1 less than 15
meters from where this happened) Martin with nowhere safe to go just got
caught up in the carnage of the other two riders that had slid down the
track in front of him after the incident at the top of the bend. I'm not
even sure if the rider that actually caused this chain of events actually
came off. I knew someone was in the wrong for causing it but at the time
the first two riders came down Martin (the third rider down) was just
entering the bend to find two riders sliding down the incline into his
path..
I missed seeing the initial cause of the incident because I was busy getting
up of the ground after my ungraceful departure from the same heat a few laps
earlier. I took a heavy high side shunt to my back wheel that put me out of
shape pretty badly before flipping me over the bars and dumping me on the
track. To make matters worse I started to slide down the track head first
toward the measuring line (the black one). I remember saying to myself as I
slid past the sprinters line "Please Stop, Please Stop". I was facing
directly toward the oncoming backmarkers as they hurtled toward me. All I
could see was shiny wheels and pedals at eye level getting closer and closer
and the black line getting closer and closer. Ok time to assume the foetal
position and wait for the impact. Amazingly I stopped sliding and the rest
of the field must have squeezed through the not very many centimetres of
track that was left between my head and the inner edge of the track. As
soon as they had passed I, still attached to the bike by one pedal, dragged
myself off the track onto the apron. Happy to escape with so little damage
to my body I removed my helmet to see if there was anything left of it. I
thought at first that it had survived but closer inspection revealed huge
cracks running all over the inside. Bugger, no more racing for me that
night. :-(
The bike escaped without any damage save for the couple of spots of melted
handlebar grip. My skinsuit like the helmet is totalled. A rather
expensive night for me but I suppose it could have been much worse had I not
stopped sliding down the track. Me personally I'm just having to put up
with a few minor friction burns, bruises and sore muscles. I'm counting
myself as being very lucky.
Before I left to go home I swung by the first aid guys to add another limb
to the injury report. There was another guy getting treatment for for some
really bad looking friction burns on his back. Ouch.
Geoff
-forgive me for not riding anywhere on Sunday.
