I've not dealt with them but byer cycles have some screw on freewheels on
their website parts list, try http://www.byercycles.co.uk/09.htm. My Raleigh
was a 7 speed (126mm rear spacing) so I got bored with screw on freewheels
and just sprung it the extra 4mm myself - have happily used 9 spd shimano
hubs and cassettes for over 12 months now with no ill effects.

An alternative to going to a 30-something spocket may be getting a 39 tooth
chainring instead of the 42? your front mech should still manage to pull 39
to 52 or 53.

52/42 is more normal at that period.

The overhaul required to upgrade a bike of this period to modern nine or
ten speed indexed transmission is probably going to be more expensive
than buying a new bike, unfortunately. You can still get parts for
bikes of this period from people such as St John St Cycles

OK Thanks for the replies... I think I now have technical solutions, but at
a cost!.

So far, I can see just one direct replacement thirty-something rear
freewheel - Regina America (St Johns). But I'm strugging to come to terms
with the £39.99 price tag - the Shimano 6 spd HG22 I got from Halfords 2-3
years ago was £15!. As this particlar bke is a work-horse, spending a lot of
time locked up in public places, I like to have it running well but on the
inexpensive side (also out of general mean-ness).

As it happens, the chainwheel is worn and also needs replacing. By my maths,
reducing the inner chainring from 42 to 39 will recover about 1/2 of the
gear ratio lost (or is it gained?) if I replace my <32 rear with standard
<28. And this would solve the freewheel problem 'forever', as subsequent
replacements would be standard. Will look into switching to cassette (but
not indexed), not sure exactly what's involved (or costs) but I measured
the distance between the forks on the rear wheel (with wheel in) at about
135mm.

Something I forgot, I called into Halfords a few weeks ago and although I
came out empty handed, the assistant said they'd be able to get my Shimano
HG22 one to order. I'm a bit doubtful but will check this.

That apart, looks like fixing this bike up is, unfortunately, going to cost
a bit - and buying a 2nd hand replacement is one possibility if I can get
one of the similar type (27x1/14). But I don't know yet and will think about
it.

BTW I counted 53 on the outer chainwheel expecting to find 52. Thought I'd
miscounted and repeated twice more, 53 again!. So I think it really is a
53, maybe it was replaced... anyway I can't find the inclination for a final
recount!.

Keep an eye on eBay - I bought a screw-on freewheel for SWMBO's bike
quite cheaply recently. In fact I just searched for "shimano freewheel"
on ebay.co.uk and got several hits:

Near the bottom of the page is a screw-on 6-speed block for £4.50.
