Yet, yawn-inducing as he is, you couldn't just post the link without
dropping his name.
The astute cynic might even quip that it was the only reason you
posted the article, using the 131 marathon story as a cover.
Indeed, let's have another thread about the metrosexual poster boy
that the troglodyte legions of ultra running never asked for.
Almost all runners and their exploits are dull---to the nonrunning
population. To each other, however, they are riveted with a keen
interest that emanates out of jealous rivalry.

Sure, though I don't know that it's any more true of running than most
other pursuits. How many in the general population breathlessly
follow the antics of, say, stamp collectors, weightlifters, comic book
aficionados, home brewers, architects, or chemists?
If you're not a celebrity via major college or pro team sports,
politics, mass media entertainment, sheer wealth, or whatever, your
exploits are probably dull to most. And even if you are, don't expect
*me* to give a rat's ass - I couldn't care less what Ty Cobb, Warren
Harding, and Theda Bara (or is there a newer crop of celebrities?) are
up to these days.

Probably some truth there, but it can't be the whole story. Nobody in
this group is in Karno's class as a runner, so where's the "rivalry"?
Maybe some people are just turned on by him. He ain't my type but I
understand many find him sexy.

Not true at all. The evidenceis found on youtube all the time. No
one ever heard of Chris "Leave Britney Alone" Crocker - and in a
matter of weeks over 13 Million people did, he's been on numerous
syndicated TV shows all over the world. Some guys with a dozen or so
diet coke bottles and some mentos are worldwide superstars with 4
million hits and endorsement deals. Your personal exploits can be
fascinating to people...if you're creative, clever, & know how to
market.

It's not about being "his class" as a runner - it's about being a
similar type of
thinker (out of the box) - there's the rivalry, that's what Doug F
despises (the mindset). DF is of the old guard stock that stresses
misery & suffering, conformity, never rise above, humility, all that
traditional ultra-running code [censored], David Horton BS the preserves
mediocrity and shuns attention and distinguishing yourself.
Kaz was clever & made a nice catch exposing deep seeded disdain for
those bringing attention to themeselves. DF dislikes DK because he's
successful at doing all the things DF both loves & hates (Ultrarunning
& Commanding the Stage/attention). Remember Pendy - you don't have to
have the physical talent level of an elite to harbor the same fire,
mindset, etc. Doug despises those that aim to rise above in any way
or context, hence his effort above to marginalize & diminish DK, the
the only known Ultra runner, the most succe$$ful with no one else
even remotely close.

Of course not. It was my poke Lance in the rips post.

well it's true, while you were busy publishing speech to diminish and
marginalize DK (see your post), DK was busy being clever, creative,
thinking outside the box, distinguishing himself from the
ultrarunning crowd, making news, being relevant, and having others
publish on him too - however their posture was a tad different than
yours.

A running start for Ultramarathon Man
Dean Karnazes, 44, takes a roundabout route to a 26-mile race.
By FRED SWEGLES
SUN POST NEWS
Karnazes, 44-year-old author of "Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an
All-Night Runner," passed through San Clemente en route to Avalon to
participate in Saturday's Catalina Eco Marathon. Most of the 500 or so
runners are taking the boat. "I'm running from Solana Beach (San Diego
County) up to Long Beach," Karnazes said, "and then hopping in a kayak
in Long Beach and paddling to Catalina, and then running the Catalina
Eco Marathon. It's about a 95 to 100-mile run to get to Long Beach and
then about a 25-mile paddle. Then a 26-mile run." Starting at 7 a.m.
Thursday, he figured to reach Long Beach at 3 or 4 a.m. today. The
paddle? Six or seven hours if the sea is smooth. Up to 10 hours, if
it's choppy. A San Francisco resident, Karnazes is writing his second
book - "50/50" - about how he ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days
last year. This year, he did a six-day, 600-km run: "I scaled the
highest peak in Australia and ran to Sydney - 'From Summit to Sydney,'
they were calling it." Then he ran 100 miles around Mont Blanc,
highest point in Europe.

Ah yes thinking out of the box. Taking exploits that have been going on
for years and years and selling them as his creation is pure marketing.
If you think marketing, aka hyping something as your own to reach the
limelight or make a few bucks is out of the box, clever and creative,
then we definitley have different value systems. It would be like you
going into a Cub scout group and touting your marathon effort as olympic
quality.
As I said before, he has some talent but when measured by his peers he
is a vocal yawner. This got one vote last year. If you want this type of
disengenous person as your idol be my guest. I would line up a lot
closer to Ted, a REAL distance runner in his time then smoke and mirrors
DK.
