Wonder if anyone had trouble with the feed. Kept cutting off or down
regulating until the race was over then the speed came back up and ran like
a champ for the ceremonies, lol.

That is an equivocal YES! Two years ago when Jan was in the best shape of
his life, Ivan and Lance rode away from him. He is older and not as focused
now. He is rich and thinking that whatever he raced for is long past. He now
rides because he signed a contract and not because he has that drive in his
gut. He signed the contract only because of the amount of money it
represented and his initial thought that he could win without Lance.

Here's the real question - has Basso peaked too early? It now appears that
Basso really DOES want to win the Giro as he promised his dying mother. Will
he be driven into the red too many times in the remaining stages so that he
cannot hit the line of the Tour in prime condition.

Ivan in shape can dump Jan. Ivan off of his edge cannot make up enough time
on Jan to make up for the peaking Jan's TT ability.

However, at this point it looks like the only one that will be able to make
a real stab at winning are Gonchar and Savoldelli unless the unthinkable
happens and Ivan gets sick again this year. Simoni is now quite out of it
for pink though he could make the podium. Cunego is crippled. He has too
much time to be a threat but not enough to be allowed to go into a
breakaway. My guess is that Basso and CSC will use Cunego as a super
domestique at this point - the "payment" will be supporting Ivan in return
for a podium position.

Our good Mr. 'Tuschinski' emailed me and made me consider that.

The giro isn't over by far. The last week is just horrible. Just one bad day
and the standings could change radically. I, too, am afraid that Basso will
tire himself out in the Giro and not be 100% fit to the Tour. The Giro must
have the most insane route that I have seen in years. And Ullrich allready
seems to be reasonbly fit, the talk about him being way overweight seems to
be more a spin of the media, rather than something based in reality.Still, I
think Basso might have a slight edge, but I predict it will be very close in
the tour this year. Good times ahead for us.

top of the pro tour.
