10 speed hubs to 9

It may be easier to just put on a 10 speed cassette if your levers are 10 speed compatible. I am not sure if Shimano Free Hubs are interchangeable. I think you buy them either 9 or 10 speed compatible as built.

Cheers for that, my shifters are pre 10 speed, but i do have the 10 speed cassette, does that mean that they could be made to work with the purchase of a rt. hand shifter ? regards

Yes.

But, for the time being, since you do have a 10-speed Shimano cassette for the wheel, if you are willing to run only 9-out-of-10 cogs -- either the first nine or last nine whereby you are NOT using the largest or smallest cog in the cassette -- then you should be able to use the hubbub.com anchoring on your current 9-speed rear derailleur cable based on being able to use the ALTERNATE anchor position on the 10-speed rear derailleur for use with the 9-speed shifters/cassette:

Ask your LBS to try a 7800 freehub body, it may be the easiest and cheapest solution. 😉

Both 9 and 10 speed clusters should usually fit on the same housing as the size of the block is about the same. It is the spacing bewteen the gears which is narrower. For this reason, a 9 speed cassette used with a 10spd deraileur will run fine on the biggest and smallest cogs, but will not run smoothly in the middle of the block.

This isn't actually the case. The splines on the 10s hub bodies are much deeper (and consequently larger in diameter) than the ones on the 9s, and therefore they physically can't accomodate a 9s cassette since it will be too small.

10s cassettes, however, can be fit to 8 and 9sp hub bodies the longer splines do fit the 8/9s bodies.

Hence the OP's question - speaking of which, I'm not sure if the 7801 hub bodies are interchangeable.

However, alfeng's suggestion would be a suitable alternative until the OP can upgrade his/her shifters.
