I've only been on one Full Sus bike and my experience wasn't very good. It seemed to "sap" quite a
bit of energy and I didn't get much feedback from the rear wheel.

Having said that it was "only" a £1000+ bike and not quite at the top end.

Are FS bikes all that good? The next bike I'd hope to get would be an (ultralight) hardtail again.

I've also seen some specs on FS bikes and they're still quite heavy compared to the lighter HTs

I started with a full suspension bike and now am riding a lightweight hardtail and love it. It
climbs unbelievably, handles effortlessly and is not uncomfortable in the least. The stable platform
suspension has received good reviews, but if you are not wanting to spend alot of cash, then it's
pretty much ruled out. Except for all out full XTR racing hardtails, most hardtails these days are
quite affordable.

Depends on what you consider heavy. I think my 26 Pound FS is pretty light, but it's heavier than my
old 23 Pound Hardtail (that's three pounds heavier for the mathematically challenged).

That being said, I'd get an '03 if you can get a good deal on one that works well for you. I'm sure
the new technology on the '04's is a combination of true innovation and hype, just like what the
'03's had over the '02's. For your first FS I bet it would be fine.

HT's are great. Nothing wrong with them. I was just after a little softer ride and I must admit got
sucked in by some flashy new technology. It's wasn't cheap. I'm still planning on building the HT
back up as an SS (maybe after the addition to the house is done - whenever that will be).

Most of the new stuff usually caries biggest price tags, so if you are big spender, it's worth to
wait, since there are new gizmos in store. If not, forget about it.

If you're looking at the middle to low end of FS bikes, then 03's are just fine. If you're looking
at the highend bikes, then wait for the 04's. They will have the latest chi chi stuff.
