rainproof backpack?

I'm looking at getting a Black Wolf Fox01 a/c it has a rain cover built into the bottom of it. It is mainly a hydration pack with some room for a bit of gear.

I've got a camelback H.A.W.G. which is rain prooft enough for
Melbourne rain :-(, comes with a hydro system and carries plenty of
stuff though not stiff A4 folders

Check your nearest Snowgum store. I saw some daypacks by One Planet I think,
that looked very waterproof, made out of a sort of PVC material like Ortlieb
panniers. They could have been intended as climbing packs.

Ah well, no.... not quite what I thought here. Only a PVC panel on the
climbing pack. But all their day packs are made of 12oz canvas. This
translates as a bit heavy, but very waterproof. I've used canvas panniers
for touring for the past 20 years, in all sorts of weather and never had a
problem with gear getting wet.

Ortleib (check the spelling) make good waterproof bags, favoured by most
cycle couriers, available from good bike shops.

It's a bit of a dodgy suggestion, but if you want light coverage from rain, you can buy a can of 3M Scotchgard waterproofing spray from a hardware store and go to town spraying it over your existing backpack.

I do this for my saddle bags (admittedly smaller than a backpack...) and MTB shoes, and it works a treat.

I've currently got a deuter tour air 30 backpack and had it for the last 4 years and never had anything get wet. I commute to work everyday, so it's been through a quite a lot of wet weather, as i'm from melbourne.

It's a great bag as you can really load it up with stuff, and it also has really good back support. Even after all that usage it still looks pretty new - no rips/tears.

Had a look on there website - looks like they do not sell the same model anymore.

The cross air, Race X Air I & II have the same back support ( Deuter Advanced Aircomfort System ) & can store 14 - 22. The seem to have improved the colour's as mine is a dark green/blue mix - not too good for visibility.

comparinf features on my current backpack i'd say the Cross air backpack looks the most similar. Currently retails @ $175.00 at cecil walker.

backpack for comuting with my laptop and other gear.

I always ride with my cycling parka stuffed into the side waterbottle
pocket, and wear that over the top of the bag when it rains.

I'm soaking wet today, but the stuff in my backpack is still dry. Looking at the bureau of met's radar - i think i should have waited for 30 mins.

all my bike clothes are hung over my computer & monitor drying out for the (wet? )trip home. Anybody got any better idea's for drying clothes??

I have the traditional wall-mounted convection heaters. I just put a few
nails in the bit above the windows and I hang clothes from clothes-hangers
on the nails over the heater. It's a gentler way of drying things than
direct heat.

The trans alp is made with 'Deuter-Super-Polytex / Deuter-Nylon' and the crossair with 'Deuter-Super-Ripstop / Deuter-Diamond-Rip' - i'm not sure which is the most strong/rainproof material. Also looking at the website the trans alp has a Airstripes back support whereas the cross air has a aircomfort.

Check the deuter website (www.deuter.com) and go to the 'systems' section to compare the airstripes & aircomfort back support systems.

Having recently fractured a couple of vertebrae in my back (8 weeks ago), I think the aircomfort system is worth the extra cash. I managed to get back commuting within 4 weeks - much to the disgust of my physio!
