  1. 2004 local CTC freewheel champion, by about 50 yards :-)

(admittedly more a function of nice racing tyres and freshly serviced
hub bearings than any great athletic prowess on my part)

Our club downhill requires Newtons laws to win, ie large mass plus high velocity gets you over the hump at the end so winning is not exactly an honour ;-)

Ours is a very small slope, followed by a gentle uphill bit which not
everyone makes it over, followed by a flat bit. My computer was
registering 0mph for the last 30 seconds.

All very official too - you get a bent spoke put through your chain at
the start so you can't pedal, and your finish is chalked clearly on the
road (measured to the nearest wheel revolution).

Gives the lie to the theory about fat tyres rolling easier - I was on
20mm tyres and they weren't even inflated particularly hard. I could go
and start another r.b.t flame war on the subject...but I'm feeling
    charitable ;-)

our one is after Xmas so all those extra mince pies come in handy for the extra mass, definitely need hard tyres though to avoid 13st of fatbast rider creating too much friction ;-)
and it has a sharp bend half way down which is always wet.

    Woooooooooo! 🙂

    Way to go 🙂

North Hampshire CTC have a freewheeling event on Sept 11th with a pace
judging event thrown in for good measure.
Meet at Cliddesden School at 10am. Enter on line.
I wonder if using the fairing on my trice would be counted as cheating?

If it's anything like our "course" the max speed reached is about 10mph
so aerodynamics aren't very important. The person with the best tyres wins.

Is Cliddesden School on Cliddesden Road? I did my "A" levels at Queen
Mary's College (at the same time as Tanita Tikaram and two years after
    Liz Hurley!)

I was there for the first two years after it opened, Queen Mary's Grammar
school before that. Nobody glamorous when I attended.

If they use Farleigh Hill then I'd hope to be going quite a bit faster.
I've just looked up that I won the event last time I rode - exactly 30
years ago but held near Beauwoth - and I was a lot lighter then.

No, its actually in Cliddesden, Which means a trip to the Jolly Farmer
after the evemts for "rehydration and carbo-load" as the CTC's mag so
    aptly states :-)

So you're a mere stripling. (I went to school with Mike Batt of Womble
    and Bright Eyes fame).
My first proper job was almost next door to Queen Mary's, and its the
favourite college, ATM, for my 15 yr old daughter after her GCSEs next year.

    Congrats Zog.

Large mass and 5lbs extra pressure in the tyres is how I won the South
Manchester CTC freewheel in the early 90's. Lost out the following year due
to a puncture on the way to the event. That course had another criteria
which eluded some competitors - the guts to not brake when taking turns near
the bottom of the downhill at over 40mph.
