I try not to let anyone's opinions of particular brands or styles of bikes
and trikes influence my feelings toward them - not always successfully, though
- but I would like to second your comments about Fast Freddy. I had never met
him before the Rally, and he struck me as an unpretentious, funny, interesting,
and approachable person. I would suggest that any group that wants to hire
someone as an after-dinner speaker, could do far worse than Freddy Markham.

Freddy's "internet presence" is quite a bit different than he is in person.
He is extremely friendly and charismatic. His opinions, often expressed
rather strongly, are derived from 30+ years of competetive cycling of all
forms. You may not agree, but you have to respect them. He has enough
stories to fill a book "hint hint", as a matter of fact, I think a
documentary of him and Gardner could be quite popular.

I feel quite lucky to count him as a close friend.

I gotta go, making a chainring adapter for him, so he can put a bigger gear
on the Varna he'll be racing at BM in just over 2 weeks! Maybe it'll be good
for 80mph?

I wasn't at the BROL rally, but wish I was since Freddy was there. I was
just wondering what kind of recumbent he rode?

I think he was "supplied" a Volae for the sunday ride, and like the rest of
us, he prob'ly rode every kind of recumbent at the saturday expo!
His "daily" ride is pretty much a standard road bike, for slamming the hills
in Santa Cruz.

I concur. I met him a few years ago when he rode Matt Weaver's "Virtual
Edge" streamliner at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and I found him to be a
sincerely congenial, courageous athlete with a loving and supportive
family. Even though I've never owned a USS 'bent, I've ridden a number
of them, some of which suited me just fine, so I don't share his low
opinion of them; but just as I have my reasons for my opinion, he has
his, and they're matters of suitability, not of dispute.

Yup, but not just any Volae.. Rolf's (Volae owner) custom spec'd Dura
Ace dual-650c Volae (which I rode on Saturday - beautiful ride).
Carbon seat and fork, light wheelset, very nice.
