I have a Cateye MITY3 that went in the washing machine about 4 years ago.
Still very much intact.

They're usually water resistant to some degree, but probably woudn't stand
up to heavy torrential rain.

My bikes have sometimes lived outdoors, and frequently get used in heavy
rain, and I have never had a bike computer fail through this. The
contacts can corrode a bit over time and need re-cleaning with some
emery paper.

Blimey .......... what cadence was the machine drum doing, and how
many miles did it do ??

Some stop working in the rain but start working again when they dry out.
I've never had a Sigma affected by rain though.

If you put a bit of petrolium jelly (vaselene!) on the contacts this won't
happen.

All mine have always ended up spoiled by rain - its the sender on the
fork - when it stops working if you take it apart you can see where
its been got at by water. The handlebar units themselves seem to
survive ok. Currently using a Cateye Enduro 2 about 2+ years old but
now defunct due to rain.
Can you buy new senders I wonder?
cheers

Cateye do an extensive range of spare parts. Unfortunately they can be
expensive so it seems better value to buy a complete new computer.

Depends what you mean by damaged. Some will stop working in heavy rain
but as soon as they dry out they are fine again. This seems to be less
of a problem than it was ten years ago.

You might have one that gets damaged by the rain, but I've never had a
problem with one and before my move I always used to leave my bikes
outdoors and commute along roads that would flood at the slightest
provocation.
As I see it, the thing about computers is they are now so cheap it doesn't
really matter if you wreck one. Alright, maybe this isn't the case with
one that does cadence, heart rate and probably makes the tea afterwards,
but Cateye's cheapest computer costs about a tenner nowadays. Plenty of
other brands cost less, and a lot are just as good. My favourite computer
is a little Sigma that just does speed, distance and the time, think I
bought it for £6.
The battery goes flat after about a year, but that costs nearly as much as
the computer. May as well get a "new toy".
In short, don't worry about it. Get out there and enjoy riding, hope your
new computer adds to your cycling experience. (:

mine did. I removed the head unit and it remained dry. The bike part is now
non functioning

Surely, it depends on the brand? I was caught in torrential rain last
week (I'm now in New York, and I never experienced anything like this
downpour in 25 years living in the UK) and both cadence and speed
functions continued to work fine on my Polar.
Was only in it for 40 minutes or so, though.

Echoes of agreement from me.

I recently had the pleasure of cycling for 2 hours in a torrential thunderstorm.
My Cateye Mity 3 soldiered fiercely on in rain that was washing well over my
rims.
Took over a week for the bike and kit to dry out, computer never missed a beat.

How's New York for cycling? Do they have cycle lanes, cycle boxes, cycle
roads like we have here? How are the NY drivers to the cyclists?
I always thought that the Americans were too "car mad" to bother with
cycling, and that obsession with cars is crossing over the Atlantic! What's
your view?
