we have entered around 40 riders from work (csiro) which is a pretty good
effort.

couldnt possibly be!
I had done 3 before that and all were simply perfect. guess last year was a 'leveller'. That tailwind coming back from Geelong was sweet tho!
besides the rain meant i saw the best bit of bike handling EVER!
In a pack of about 20 going south thru Mt Eliza way and a guy goes down at the front (not sure why. drink bottle maybe). anyway, i got round the right and the guy to my left i was fully expecting to go down to, BUT HE BUNNYHOPPED OVER HIM!!!
I looked in amazement at him, he had the biggest grin onhis face and the crowd was hushed with reverence.
Guy behind us muttered "All those years as a courier came in handy, Andy!"

Go to mc2.vicnet.net.auindex.htmlOpen ↗ and type in 'around the bay' in search communities. There is a forum dedicated to the ATB
All power to your legs if you're up for doing the ATB. Personally I'm more motivated in being able to knock over a 200km Audax ride. Then work up to a PBP, ah, dreams are good to have..... 😄

I've done the ATB the last 3 years, enjoyed it. I've entered myself for the Alpine Classic now...I don't think I know what I'm getting myself in for 🙂 I'd like to do it under 10 hrs
I’m in!
‘Bout 5 from work doing it too, most riding roadies
Be my 6th time over 10 years. All on MTB’s running semi slicks. Gonna throw the ole’ Continental Avenue Semi Slicks on the Stomper-jumper.

Last year was good fun waiting for the ferry @ Sorrento with that cross wind on the pier after being soaked to the bonie. :o

I'll be popping up from Tas to do it. It'll be my second ATB. First time I was on my MTB with slicks, but I've got a nice Trek 1200 to do it this year. Can't wait.

Alpine rule for 10 hours time:
Dont go under 10kph, and dont stop for longer than 10 minutes at any checkpoints-water stops. you doin 130k or 200k?

I'll be doing the 200k,6.20 start. I made sure I put my entry in straight away, so I can't back out 😄 It will be a new experience,as I've never climbed for that length of time. How does the 1:20 compare in gradient? Thats prob the only decent climb I've done (19:25)

Tawonga Gap and the majority of Falls are like 1-20 but for a total of (12k+35ish-k) 37k. The last section of Falls after the gatehouse approx 5k from the top is demoralising as it gets harder then eases off.
Tip, for 10 hours IMHO. get to the top, pee, drink/eat as quick as possible, grab what food you can and get going asap. The descent to Mt Beauty takes a while so you have plenty of time to rest (and cool down!). If you sit about you can cramp up pretty easy (i did it with a comical panic dismount to stretch near the bottom). Tawonga is a stonker and may see you tempted to stop at the lovely Bright (especially as you get demoralised that some guys are already finished!).
Buffalo is just a steady climb. it will be hot if sunny as much is open due to being one big lump of granite and bushfires.
Got more info and ride blurbs if you want em.

Yeah definately be interested in all the info I can get my hands on. I'm hoping its not too hot. Where are the water stops located? One of my problems is that I often forget to keep drinking. I've just bought a Camelbak which helps.

Top of tawonga
Mt Beauty
Numerous creeks on the way up to Falls
(bogong is off the road so dont count on that one)
The gatehouse (toilets too. 5k from top)
Falls
all those reversed
Natural spring about 2k from top of Tawonga (this one's a godsend!)
Mt Beauty
Natural spring about 14km up Buffalo
sometimes they park a watertruck halfway up too
Chalet or dingo-whatever where the 'top' was this year. grrrrr

I'm training up at the moment for the Great Southern Randonee, based in Anglesea from 25th to 28th October. Should be a blast. They have distances from 300km, all the way up to a full PBP 1200km. I'm probably going to do the 300km, but my training partner is working on me to do the 400...

Suzy (who's mostly concerned about not sleeping for that long)

That's not my issue.. my trouble would be keeping my
aching backside on a saddle for that long! Ooow!
ATB is enough for me I think. Dunno if I'm doing this
year's one though. Maybe on the fixie? :-)
Can you tell I'm still looking for the perfect saddle? :P

I think it's only fair to warn you that Audax riders from far and wide
HATE 400's. 300 seems to be _THE_ favourite distance. The 1200 and the
1000, even if they seem dauntingly long, are my favourites. Easily..:-)
400's are just plain awfull.

That's why a 400 is so bad. You have to spend enough time out there
to get _really__really_ nackered. Well I, at my pace, do anyway.
