  1. Hi,

One more question: paint chipped off the dropouts of one of my bikes.
If I put new paint on it, it will probably be damaged again. Is there a
product you would apply on it other than paint or would you leave it the
way it is? The damaged area is larger than the area covered by the skewers.

    TIA! Derk

  2. get different types of skewers. and don't screw them when they are in the
    lock position.
    that generally will help. paint.

If it's a steel dropout, apply either a cold galvanize coating
(they're soft, and they don't chip) or a preservative wax (LPS3 can
serve for this, if I recall correctly) to prevent corrosion. Paint
and powdercoats are brittle, and can be expected to chip in this area.
    That's normal.

If the dropout is aluminum, I'd say to ignore it unless you ride in an
area that has a salt spray problem...in which case, you have bigger
trouble ahead than just that paint chip.

Words processed in a facility that contains nuts.

  5. The axle nuts and the dropouts need to "bite" into the dropouts to be effective. This is why the nuts and skewer faces are hardened steel with "teeth" or serrations on the better quality equipment. And its also why the dropouts are softer steel or aluminum on virtually all bikes.

Thin chrome plating is also used on some bikes but it soon flakes off.

If you touch-up paint these sections, leave the raised boss of the dropout bare to prevent chipping. A bit of grease or oil wil prevent corrosion and will not affect the holding of the skewer.

Man, you should come here: as soon as the word "frost" is mentioned at the
weatherforecast, the council puts so much salt on the roads that I REALLY
sometimes think it snowed that night.

That's why I have a 12 year old bike for the winter :-)

    Thanks, Derk

Ignore it. It will take thousands of years to rust through such a thick
lump of metal, and you'll have had it resprayed by then (if you like the
    frame).
