I am just getting into mountain biking and have been looking for a good hardtail starter bike in the range of $250-350. I was set to buy a new trek 4300 for $300 dollars but now my brother told me he wants to sell me his trek 8000. I believe his trek is a 2001 so its not new, (red and white). Just wondering what would be my best bet, to go a head and just buy the new 4300 or buy my brothers 8000 which is three yrs old? my brother tells me the guy at the shop said his bike is still worth $500, im getting the family discount and he wants to sell it to me for $300. what shall i do?

I'd go for the second hand 8000, without a second thought (assuming of course that it fits you and isn't neglected to the point of needing a total rebuild.)
Especially in this price range, every little extra bit the bike costs/is "worth", you get significant upgrades in quality and durability.
I don't know what the details of the 2001 Trek 8000 were, but comparing 2004 vs. 2004 spec, the 8000 completely blows the 4300 out of the water, and then into the weeds. And kicks dust in its face afterwards.
