oh, baby... took the Svelte Hawaiian out for neighborhood spin after doing
the last few things to it. This being, had LBS put a new chain on, and my
dear hubby put my new odometer. Granted it's not a trail ride, but I wanted
to give it a real tryout prior to taking out on the trail, in case there
were some obvious adjustments that needed to be done.
So after putting two new chain rings on, new chain, new rear d. hanger,
changed elevation of front d, and a new chain.... wow, quiet and smooth. I
mean, silent and effortless. I went up and down some hills, ran it through
all gears on the rear and front, and all I can say is "wow".One or more of
those things, or a combination seemed to have at least at first blush cured
my drive train woes. That remains to be seen of course, and I have to
retrain myself not to shift under load if I can avoid it if at all possible.
I get just a hair of f.der noise when I've set up as an obvious
cross-chain... big ring in front and lowest 1/3 of the cogs in the back. No
one in their right mind who knows their gears would ride like this,( at
least I would never aside from testing out shifting) so is a little noise
in this "improper" position typical, or should I try and fine tune the
f.der a little more?
in case anyone cares, the various symptoms I was experiencing were: ghost
shifting in the back, chain getting thrown to the inside of granny ring,
finicky action on the front derailleur shifter tab-thingy, mild to moderate
chain suck, and chain suck so bad that it took two of us to un-suck it one
day.
