By "Self-Extractor", I mean that little thing that screws in over the crank-securing bolt on an ISIS-type splined crankset. It's purpose is to act as a barrier when the crank bolt is backed out - causing the pressure generated to slip the crank off the spline.
When trying to remove a crank, I managed to make mine bulge, then completely separate - leaving most of it still threaded in the crank (in LocTite, no less....).
Seems like there's a downside to those handy little self-extractors....-)
Anybody got a technique?
I'm thinking apply the tip of a hot soldering iron to the remaining part in hopes of separating it from the LocTite and then picking at it with an awl or packing knife. It would be nice to get it out with enough threads left to support a crank extractor.... -- PeteCresswell
Cutting a few grooves in your extractor threads mimics a tap\thread chaser and won't ruin it. If all fails, Stein makes a fabulous re-tap kit with extractors. Tom
