Channel Four pogrom this evening about an Irish GP who took his
long-suffering wife and four daughters (ages 8-17) cycling from
Normandy to Gibraltar in the middle of winter. The rest of the family
didn't want to go and clearly hated the overwhelming majority of the
trip. He never let up. No time to see anything, no time to talk to
anyone, come on, just another hundred kilometers before bedtime, and
then we'll find a nice campsite with nice warm sleet falling and you
can put up your wet tents and sleep in your summer weight sleeping
bags... He hadn't got them decent sleeping bags because he didn't think
they would be cold. Crossing the Pyrenees in December.

so much, why did he not just go by himself?

As far as you could tell from the programme, the girls hadn't ever done
any cycle touring before - you'd think he'd've taken them out for a week
nearer home, just to make sure they were physically capable of doing
the distance.

And the bit where one of his daughters had a cold that had gone on to
her chest and he pressed on regardless - surely as a GP he should have
known better.

The guy came across as a complete [censored]. He didn't seem to realise they are
kids and need some fun. The least he could have done is taken them to a
funfair/circus/theme park to get their spirits up. And when he did take them
on 'trips' it was to some incredibly boring museums and WW2 relics. He just
seemed totally obsessed with getting to his destination ASAP, what's the
point travelling so far if you're not gonna do some sight seeing? And in
winter? With sub-standard sleeping bags? Gordon Bennet.

I did the same thing with my daughters. We saw the eclipse in Luxembourg,
France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, the old DDR, Swiss Alps, Innsbruck,
Saltsburg, Bavaria, Prague, Italian lakes etc. Except we were in a car and
stayed in 4 star hotels and they loved it :-) Best thing I ever did, you
can't rewind your life back to when your children are young ever again.

I don't have kids, so perhaps shouldn't comment. It seems that your kids
had a good time, GREAT! & his kids suffered, almost to the point of
child abuse, so that he could indulge himself.

I commend enjoyable educational activities with or without kids.

I wouldn't have put my daughters through what he did, although I can see
his point to a certain extent. His children will get a mental strength and
self reliance from the experience, but it was a bit extreme seeing kids so
young struggling in the mountains in the winter, but they survived and once
they've recovered, they may look back on the trip as a key part of their
self discovery. Or then again they may look back on it as sheer hell!

I don't know, but I bet there were times in your Audax career when you went
through worse than them, but I bet you look back on it now with pride that
you did what so few people are capable of doing.

I was an adult and had chosen to do my audax rides myself. I did not
impose them on anyone else, much less those below the age of consent.
(Actually, I would often argue that kids of >10 can give valid consent
to many things.)

And what constitutes 'horrid' depends on the kid 🙂
My parents took us hut-to-hut walking in Norway when we were resp. 12, 10
and 8 yo. I loved it and still do. My sister didn't see the point of
spending 2 weeks walking from A to B if you could do it in a couple of
hours by train and has never done any serious walking since. I suppose
wading through cold rivers and working your way up steep snow slopes can
be called a horrid trip, but my parents guessed right that we'd like it (I
don't think my sister hated it), we were used to walking, and they adapted
the trip to our needs (a rest day every other day, slow pace, long breaks
to build dams).

Self reliance! He wouldn't let them make one decision for themselves. He
wouldn't even let them decide what they ate for lunch, for heaven's
sake! And when he appointed his seventeen year old daughter as
navigator for a day, he over-rode her every decision. He wasn't
training her to be self reliant, he was training her to be an obedient
and submissive sheep for some similarly abusive man to bully in due
course.
