Just wind some electrical tape over the end of the bar tape.

The bar tape usually comes with two strips of tape for that reason,
as well as a couple of bar end plugs.

I found that my first few attempts were [censored] even though I had good
instructions on how to do it. I guess you just get better at it with
some experience.

Shure nuff. You need to provide adequate tension on the tape - be very careful if it's Cinelli, as it tears without warning. Getting the wrap around the brake/gear lever is sometimes tricky, esp with Ergolevers. You may need to rewrap the top section a couple of times to get the length and overlap right. Keep trying! You'll get it!

Tape is OK. But you could also try eletrical zip-ties.

Hmm. You'll have to file the cut off end to avoid dig-ins on your thumbs, maybe? Could be ugly. Vern Smith swears by a dab of superglue under the end of the tape.

Hmm...I've now seen some special "Cinelli Tape Locks" that appeal to me as
that way I won't get sticky electrical tpe glue on my hands, and won't have
them unravelling mid ride. So, where to get such a thing (or equivalent) in
Perth...or can anyone in Oz do them mail order?

I can't say that I've seen Cinelli Tape Locks, but I can tell you two things from my own experience.

1. The tape that comes with with the bar-tape is fine.
2. If you don't think there is enough tape supplied with the bar-tape, electrical tape is a perfectly acceptable alternative. It doesn't leave glue everywhere unless you peel the tape off.

Save your dough! Dig out the lecky tape!
