The guys at the LBS will true my wheel for free, but I give them homemade
baked goods and beer on a regular basis.

I think you might mean that your wheel is 'out of true'. Unless your wheel
looks something like this:

For a simple truing, generally $8-12 is reasonable depending on the prices
in your area. If your wheel looks like the above pic, your going to need
at least a new rim and a wheelbuild. Which would be more like $75+.

I have done that to three wheels. Had to get high spoke count wheels.

Refreshing my memory because this is an old thread:

It appeared to be a new bike, recently bought.
It appeared (to me) to be a non-functional part. The 3 speed hub was
possibly slipping between gears, or disengaging on its own.

Taken the above into consideration, it would appear that the bike/hub was
broken, and still under warranty.

Ergo, the sensible thing to ask would be...what does the guy that will do
the warranty work think?
