  1. Just a heads up for those who are doing the Surrey Hills tomorrow - I
was thinking of bottling it, but the weather looks like holding.

I'll be in the red, black and gold colours of Canterbury Cycle Club if
    anyone wants to say hello.

I'll be there too (riding a blue Fort). Looks like a lot of climbing!

I will be there, in an AUK top and a yellow Ribble, assuming my new
chain and chainset performs. Have only done it in fine weather,
apprently it is the Ride from Hell in the rain.

hope you enjoyed it, Simonb passed me on the first big hill
(Winterfold) and I thought that was the last I'd see of him but he got
back 15 min before me, I was well chuffed, got the gold badge by 18
min with a triple up virtually every hill, I think on this sort of
ride a low gear destroys your legs less and you seem to go quicker.
    The Surrey Hills certainly bite!

Ugh. I'm feeling it today. 4 hrs 48 mins!

    Yup, after a fashion...

I saw you at the start, Martin, but you went off with one of the early
bunches before I had a chance to say hello. And there was no danger of
me ever catching you en route.

I missed it by about the same margin. 🙁

I was on course to come in just under 5 1/2 hours right up to about
90km, but by that stage I was already suffering from bad cramps and
    White Down finished me off.

I made a few tactical errors too - pushed a bit hard on parts where I
didn't need to, and I'm sure I didn't eat and drink enough en route,
hence the cramps. The fact that I'd had a few beers and went to bed late
the night before can't have helped a great deal either - I had planned
an early night but was roped into taking part in a pub quiz. And we came
    second. Pah!

Yes, there were several times I ran out of gears. Box Hill was fine - I
got a good rhythm going, spinning a low gear, and following a charming
young lady who did a good job of pacing me (so I got a good view while
going up the hill as well as at the top 🙂 ).

My trouble was on the steeper slopes where I had no option but to honk
it. A triple would have been very handy.

Yup. But I definitely fancy giving it another go next year.

bad luck, it is a tough time to make, I was dawdling along when I
realised I had 35 not 65 mins to go; really went for it after the last
    control, running on empty

Yes that one is definitely the worst, not actually the steepest but
not what you want at 90k

good on you, if you want something a little more flat (but not much)
there is the Mid Sussex Hilly 100 on 16.10.04, usually features Cob
Lane in Ardingly, about 1/3 at the top; my local hill from Hell!

    Today I'm not _too_ bad.
    4hrs 20mins for me which
included a detour to Ockley! ( I went left at Coldharbour )
I also missed having that 25 on the back.
For the record I drunk 0.75L of PSP22
    and 1.5L of water.
100g of muesli for breakfast, and a banana about 0900.
A couple of slices of maltloaf and a banana kept me going.
It was my first experience of Audax, is
    post-ride tea/sandwiches/cake always like that?
    i.e plentiful and free?

    about 5km
I went down the road West of Broome Hall
    http://tinyurl.com/5b4zz
to Ockley, realised what I had done,
so took the B2126 to get back on course.

Usually, though not always. Mmm... rice pudding. The early season 'Gourmet
200k' included that amount of grub at the end of the penultimate stage! Then
more at the end; not free, but very cheap. That was back in March and much
cooler so the need for sustenance was greater.

Woah! That's fast. It's not a race, you know. 😉

I think self-sufficiency is the norm, particularly on longer rides, but
I've been lucky enough to have enjoyed superb catering on all three AUK
    rides I've done so far.

I felt good enough to do a moderately gentle 15 miles this morning.
    Still very tired though.

If davep went left in Coldharbour that means he missed out Leith Hill,
so the size of the detour is probably not as relevant as it might be. 😉

My club-mate missed the turning for Shere at East Clandon. He deserted
me after White Down in a frantic bid to make the gold time but in the
end he trailed in just behind me. He must have gone almost as far as
    Guildford.

I used to ride these hills many years ago. Must see about doing it next
year. I'll see if I can get hold of a tandem and train my 7yo as a stoker
;-) (she'll be 8 by then and it is in the school holidays).
