Don't overlook p-clips - these are little rubber coated clips that will
let you fit a rack however you like.

let you fit a rack however you like.

Also, if it's really credit-card touring, does one even need a rack? What about
a Carradice or VauDe saddlebag with an SQR-type support? Cheaper, lighter, more
flexible.

I think it is preferable to mount the rack innermost, and fix the
mudguard stays outside - bending them and weaving through the rack
framework if necessay.

Apart from the other replies (mounting mudguards on same bolts as rack):
Tubus and SL have mounting holes for mudguards on their racks. But
realise that you'll have to mount a full-size mudguard at two more
points: in the 'saddle region' and down below behind the bracket. So if
you're thinking of a mudguard that *only* attaches to the rack you'll
have to make do with shorter and less effective ones.

Yes thats what I have done with my rear and low rider racks, never had any
problems with it. I think I have the racks in board.

This what I have done, it works for me and is secure.

Get a very long bolt and screw it in from the inside outwards. Put the rack
onto the bolt, apply washer and screw on a nut quite tightly. Then place
another washer against the nut, put on guard stays and another washer, put
on another nut and tighten. Cut off any remaining bolt with a junior hacksaw
and clean up with a file.

I looked at this and there was really no way to do it on mine. One of the
stays is virtually parallel to one of the rack stays, so it would get all
complicated at the bottom.
