Nah, the cut-outs are there to provide zero pressure on sencitive parts of your arss, to reduce numbness etc. Lots of delicate stuff around there, 1 mm one way or another could sprell heaps of soreness.

With Gel in saddles, my limited exp has found that a good shape seat can be made of granite & it would be comfortable

My last saddle with gel in it( on my daily commuter) lasted 3yrs & the gel bit sagged alittle. Now i run a top $ saddle & its real hard but feels great. (maybe my [censored] has toughen up).

The benifits (I am told)of Gel filled seats is the fact that it is easier on the heavier bums on them. It seems to take the shape of the bum and therefore evens out the weight distribution to a greater area of the bum.
The cutouts are for the correct anatomical shape for both male and female. I personally use a non-gel filled male "touring" type seat with a fairly large cutout area as I have had cancer surgery in that area.
the result is that where I used to have to stand and relieve my aching bum every 10 minutes or so, I can now sit and ride for over an hour in complete comfort without standing. I have never been able to use those
little skinny racing seats and have always wondered how any body could, but all my riding mates love them! Without gel filling too!

Im finding the longer/more i ride, the harder i want my saddle. subtle form of masochism you may say, but my saddle feels soft after 3 hours and i dont enjoy it.

OK I just got me a Brooks B17, with the nifty titanium rails. I
ordered it from the UK (delivery to Singapore 3 days!!!)

Anyway its wide, rock hard and slippery as a jellyfish.
I was shocked that a hard saddle could be comfortable even on first
ride.

The sleek polished leather allows for a range of movement I never
expected, and is a real plus!

I moved to try a Brooks from a fear that the saddle I love (low end
specialised with fart slot) will be nicked or die soon, and wanted to
find an alternative (comfy saddle)that would still be manufactured in
5 or so years. I have this strange fear that after about 10 years of
searching for a comfy saddle - and finding it, that it will not be
around for long enough... So looking for a 'clasic' thats is comfy is
my aim.

I will keep you posted if the B17 makes it to the Holy Grail level of
unadulterated comfort. 🙂 (looks promising so far...)

My 2 cents: Good shape and correct positioning kicks [censored] over all
gel/slots/wool covers ect ect..

Oooh, drool! Titanium rails would be sooo nice. I've just ordered the Brooks
Conquest from SJS Cycles. The extra springs should make rough dirt roads and
fire tracks more comfortable on my rigid MTB tourer. I had an old Brooks
Competition (not like their current plastic based one but real leather) for
many years and it was always comfortable, the right shape even if hard for
the first year.

But that hard top will slowly comform and develop the right amount of give.
One approach is to turn it upside down and soak it with neatsfoot oil (not
too sure where you'd get that now).

Yes this is one of the less well known advantages of leather saddles,
together with the fact that they will mould to your individual butt shape to
produce a comfy ride.

Friends of mine in the touring club have recently gone back to Brooks
leather and the B17 rates very highly with them.

Its not quite reached the holy grail stage, but looks promising.

The thing is getting pretty comfy. I mean its hard, but fits..
'Fits' is not a word I would ever use with saddles pre this one. I
used to rate them on 'comfort' which is it seems a plushness rating.
Bugger me if this thing does actually FIT.

The titanium is nice but sadly not noticable once your [censored] is on top
of the thing. Strangely at 400g and something grams this is lighter
than my old Specialised saddle.

I have been using Brooks for about 15 years now, never been able to
understand all this "they need wearing in".I would not consider any
other saddle.
Decided not to go titanium, it is cheaper to lose weight (plus I can
spend the money on beer).
