I have NEVER raced before. I know I need a license and what not, however it says I can pay for a one day license when I get there. Obvisouly I'd be in the beginner class (Cat 5 correct?), so just some quick tips would be very much appreciated! Anything I should know to make registration easier?
An 8 mile criterium??? Good grief! Sit in the middle of the pack for 7.5 miles - forget all aspirations of winning until you've made it that far without getting dropped - then consider yourself successful for finishing.

I watched the 4th Street Crit last year. It looks pretty tough. Not sure,I'm not a racer yet. 4 right hand corners, start off on a slight up hill, the back of the course is down then up. I saw a lot of people get dropped off the back. But it still looks like fun. I plan to go see it again this year. Thought about racing but my fitness level isn't there yet. I don't want to be the one guy that goes down with heart failure...

I was just in my first race, and my 1392 miles of training was not enough to make me compete well. It was a 20 min race + 1 lap. And my heart rate avg for the race was 95% MHR!
The cat 5 racers were doing an avg of 26 mph!
Keep your hands always near the brakes when entering a corner -- preferably on the drops. I made the mistake of holding the handlebars on the top -- couldn't brake -- and I crashed into a corner curb. I was lucky I didn't cause a pileup or ruin my $3000 bike.

Are you still planning to ride the crit on the 10th? Let me know. I'm going to be there. Not racing but watching. Maybe I can lend some moral support.
