I am a big guy and this is my problem. When going up a really steep hill, my chain breaks. Usually I smash my knee into the neck at that point. Do they make better chains or is it that I am in bad combinations of front and rear chain rings?

Sachs chain, non crossed.
Bill "BTW, 'Rebecca' doesn't suit you" S.
I second the Sachs (well, SRAM these days) motion. PC58/59 or better.

The last time my chain broke the bike and chain were new. The idiot that placed the chain on the bke didn't know what he was doing It cost me a 4 mile walk in the dark. I broke my chain tonight to shorten it used a Ritchey tool C5.
I have been there. I always try to remember my chain tool. Tonight, I managed to land the bike wrong and somehow pulled the bead of the tire out of the rim in one spot. That's a first for me. I am lucky that was it, because I nearly ate it. I also hit a jump and hit my head on a tree branch. Like George of the Jungle. I am not a really good rider, but I try. Usually, I wind up upside down or walking the bike home.
