Do you suppose they dropped the Vuelta because they wanted to? No sponsors
means no Vuelta. Write Ford or Chevrolet if you want to see it.

Are you sure that it is lack of sponsors? They must have had sponsors
interested when they put out the initial press release announcing that they
were carrying it live again. I wonder about the change is bicycle coverage
after Discovery Channel picked up the title sponsorship from Postal.

Maybe they spent too much money with all the crappy non-cycling shows
for the TDF. Now they can't afford to carry the live coverage. It
really sucks any way you look at it.

Aside from the extent to which it affects their bottom line (which is
marginal at best), OLN shouldn't be making their decisions based upon what
is best for cycling. OLN's job is to decide what's best for OLN.
A better way to convince OLN not to drop the Vuelta coverage is to point out
the manner in which the Vuelta showcased many of the potential threats to
Lance's winning #6 (and perhaps #7 next year), and that it helped create
excitement (and viewers) for their core product... the TDF coverage.
I'll fess up. I find much of the terrain showcased in the Vuelta to be not
nearly as interesting as you find in the TDF. There are incredibly long
stretches of open road without towns, or so it seemed, and the mountains
appeared considerably more arrid. Hey, that's just my own personal taste.
Yet I watched the Vuelta daily when it was on. Why? Because the TDF had
introduced me to many of the riders, and it gave a sense of continuity...
and continuity increases interest all across the board.

Actually USPS, and all of lance's sponsors are financing OLN. No Lance, no
coverage.
Why don't they just pick up and re-broadcast the Spainish coverage ? I
saw the RAI re-cast of the Giro back in the late 90s here and it was
fantasic. I don't care if the commentary was in a foriegn language;
the graphics were sufficent to tell the story. Same thing with the
TdF; most of the show was silly bios of American riders and American
bikes.

That's how they would do it in the first place, exactly how it is done
with the Tour (except for the added commentary).

That's what I thought, but it's apparently not the case. When you're
watching the coverage in France, you don't get nearly the same on-screen
info that OLN gives you (captions that tell you who's in the lead, what the
time gaps are between groups, even the distance to the finish).
What you do get in France are the cool one-sheet cartoons the guy does on
the fly.

Oh OK, I wasn't thinking of that (just the race images) but apparently
that's also part of the added value per station. And I knew that,
because Eurosport also has these in-house developed graphs and stats.

I would love coverage in spanish. Maybe one of the local spanish channels
will pick up the coverage.

It would be normal for them to set a schedule long before they had
sponsors for all their programs. Again, the problem is sponsors. If
there were sponsors willing to pay their Vuelta bill OLN would stop
transmitting Lumberjack Champions tomorrow.

That's because the Spanish coverage is not as closely controlled as
the French coverage. Spain is at least as interesting as France.
That is at least as long as we don't have Al Trautwig telling us that
this is the region in which Neanderthal Man was first discovered.

How do you KNOW that the problem is with Sponsors?

None of us KNOWS that the problem is with sponsors of course, but the
fact that the schedule a month ago was for complete live coverage plus
highlight shows and that CHANGED in the last few weeks is suspicious,
especially given how sucessful OLN was with the TdF last month. It's
doubtful that the VaE orgnizers suddenly raised their price.
Other possibilities: Red Wrigglers and Johnson Outboards are pumping in
tons of commercial money and insisting on more fishing shows.
Landrider has a new 2-hour infomercial that they want to run 4 times a
day during September.
A massive letter-writing campaign by bull riders and RV drivers
threatened a boycott.
I notice the on-line petition has over 11 thousand sigs now.

No i think there in maybe more or the same amount of info regarding the leads,
gaps, groups, timing etc, and if it s not on the screen, the commentators gives
the info.

Even my dreadful attempts at understanding French tell me that the "style"
of presentation is very different on France TV than Eurosport or OLN. The
audio commentary isn't filling in the gaps, so to speak. The fixation on
who's ahead, who's behind and by how much may be more of a cultural thing.
Maybe we demand the score more often in basketball as well?
