  1. I recently changed from a 32 hole Mavic Open Pro/Ultegra rear wheel to a 36
    hole. I assumed I would get the same 14/15 db spokes on the 36 that I had on
    the 32.

    Now after about 500 miles I notice that the spokes on the 36 are thinner
    than the ones on the 32. Both are double-butted with brass nipples.

    Any performance issues with the thinner gauge 36 spokes vs. the heavier 32
    spokes?

    The hub to spoke interface is always an issue. Durability of the wheel goes down as the mismatch goes up. The spoke hole inner diameter should be .1 mm larger than tthe outer diameter of the spoke threads for optimum reliability. Thinner gauge in the mid span can be achieved with spokes like DT Revolution. There are DT Revolution spokes that have 2.0 mm diameter at the ends and 1.5 mm diameter mid-span. The spokes will have just as good durability because the spoke/hub interface is not comprimised... and they may be even better at vibration damping. They will have sligtly less lateral stiffness... but some of that difference may be made up by having 4 more spokes and the difference in spoke support angles.

    Basically, if the ends of your spokes are 14 g., I wouldn't worry about fatigue strength. Did you notice any difference in lateral stiffness or any ride/braking issues?

  3. The added redundancy of 36 spoke wheels makes even 14/17 butted spokes reliable and adequately stiff for all but the largest Clydesdale.

    Never seen myself, but heard that 18g on a 28 were once in use. ????

    Since they're both double-butted only problem i see is with the
    thinner center part. Thinner spokes twist more easily so there could
    be (more) wind up in the these spokes which could result in spokes
    loosening etc. Depends on the build quality.
