I tried to grease my speedplay zero pedals, and having a problem.
According to the docs, all you have to do is take the screw out of the grease port and squirt grease in with a grease gun until it starts oozing out around the spindle on the other side.
Sounds simple enough, except when I do it, the grease never goes through to the other side. The grease just builds up under the dust cap until it squirts out around the edges of the dust cap.

Hm, this works when I've done it. Have you had success with this grease gun elsewhere? Sure you're applying enough pressure to get it to seal inside the fitting? If yes and yes, maybe something's wrong with the fitting. Both pedals have this problem?

You're supposed to remove the dust cap before greasing.

Removing the dustcap is only on the older pedals, the new ones you just remove a screw.
I've had a similar experience with the grease not going through the pedal on several of the speedplay pedals that I have. I've also had a pedal where the pressure of the grease pushed some kind of bearing/sleeve out of the other side. I assume this one can be rebuilt, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
I love the pedals, but Speedplay's bearings have never seemed the best to me.

Time for me to do this again too....
It's not the official speedplay grease gun, but it has a narrow enough tip to fit in the grease port.
I just tried one pedal. Since it wasn't working, I haven't bothered with the other.
I did take the dust cap off to see where the grease is supposed to go, and it looks like...nowhere. There is a donut shaped bearing underneath with a screw in the middle holding it all together. I don't see how it's possible to get enough pressure to force grease past the bearing before it pops the dust cap off (which is what happened to me).

I recommend getting a 'torx' driver of the proper size, take off the end cap, then the torx screw holding it all together, take it apart, clean, relube. The squirt grease is a temporary 'fix' and should not be used instead of a take apart. Remember that the inside bearings run on the spindle. Kill the spindle, kill the pedal(altho replacement spindles are available.)

Yeah, ignore my first post. I use the Frogs on all my bikes. I inject new grease into them every 4 months or so. I don't use a grease gun because I use a disposable syringe. Here's how I grease my Frogs. First I remove the pedals from the cranks. I then stand the pedal up on a hard surface with its grease port facing the ceiling. With the grease port open I place the needleless syringe filled with grease firmly against the grease port hole. You have to apply plenty of force to the plunger as well as downward pressure on the nozzle hole to grease port contact point in order to push the old grease out with the new grease. I would NOT be able to regrease my Frogs if I were to hold a pedal in one hand and operate the syringe with the other. I would not have enough pressure on the syringe nozzle hole to keep the grease from oozing out between the grease port and nozzle interface. That's why I stand the pedal on a hard floor. I suggest you put your shoulder into the grease gun handle during the regreasing process. Works for me.

not sure if the regular speedplay's have this problem but with the frog's when I took it apart enough just to see if I could clean the bearings. I could not tighten the bolts enough as they started stripping. then the one pedal I took apart got all sloppy. so make sure you can fully tighten it.

Not on the newer X series or Zeros. They all have the little screw. Which I wonder if I can buy new dust caps with the screw for the grease injector rather than having to pry the cap off for my X2's.

App
I got the replacement dust caps with the screw from Speedplay but was not able to install them without damaging them. I've used the injector with Finish Line grease and the stuff oozes onto the axle and makes a mess for months. Next time I'm going to tear them down and use Phil Wood.
