I built my bike with a double chainring. The weight difference is negligible (I think). I wanted a double chainring because I don't live in an area with lots of hills, so I don't really need a third ring. Triple rings also cost more, and so do the shifters and derailleurs for triple rings. I thought I might struggle on hills with my double ring in the front and 12-23 in the back, but I am usually never below 3rd gear in the small ring on hills.

the main difference is what type of riding you will be doing..
if you are doing just causal riding and no racing i would get a third ring...
that way you can spin up hills easier...otherwise in races you dont want to be in such a low gear cuz you wont be goign any where...
