David, this is uncalled for especially since he said over in one of the
metallurgy groups that he did some SawzAll surgery to his race bike just last
week. <g>

As for kickstands- none of my bikes have them but both my wife's bikes do.
Maybe kickstands are a chick thing?

OCLV or titanium kickstands?? Maybe all it takes is a cool material to
make them popular.

I refuse to put a kickstand on my bike, because of the added weight. But, I
ride to a flea market every weekend, and it is a real pain finding places to
lean the bike, or, horrors! laying it down. So, I have devised the
following solution: I will carry a kickstand in my backpack, and bolt it on
while I am at the flea market, and then take it off again for the ride home.

You see, I don't worry about the weight if my backpack--only the bike.

I do, I do!

I don't mind the added weight since my bikes are a little piggish by
todays standards anyway, and since I'm riding for fitness I'm not
concerned with shaving precious grams. I wrap the chainstays with
bits of an old inner tube to protect them and then bolt the sucker on.
Very frickin' handy.

Chicks dig my kickstand. So to speak.

Think about it man, that just scratches the surface, the possibilities
are staggering. We could have learned articles on "kickstand fit" and
its affect on rider performance. How about "aero kickstands?" Then there
is "kickstand technique"--with correct technique the pain in my achilles
tendon of my left leg went away and the loud klunking sound on every
pedal cycle was gone. Then there are installation issues. Surely Sheldon
Brown could make a contribution here. Finally there are the hardcore
tech questions. Shortly we would be hearing from Jobst who would tell us
that we've got it all wrong and that according to an analysis he did in
1982...

My S.O. won't have a bike without one. She keeps small rear panniers and a
trunk pack on the bike all the time, for hauling miscellaneous stuff, and

I don't have one on either of my bikes, but my new (secondhand) MTB has
mechanical disc brakes... first time I've had them on a bike. That
complicates the idea of laying the bike down, if you're out in the open and
there is nothing to lean it against. Suddenly there is no good side for
doing that. You can choose between damaging your drivetrain, or else
getting mud or grass bits jammed into your disc brake calipers or lever
arm. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but there's now a lot of complicated
mechanical [censored] on the "off" side of the bike where I used to lay it down.

So I might get a kickstand... maybe one of those Euro double jobs, that
lift the rear wheel.

That's a damned lie and you know it! I race a Pinarello. And the
kickstand it once had was removed before I bought it from the second
owner.

I have them on all of the recumbents, including the tandem - the lower
center of gravity makes the bike a lot more stable with a good kick
stand.

I have them on none of the diamond frames. Too unstable, and why have
it (in most cases) if you can't walk away for a couple of moments?

Besides, it reminds me of one of my earliest mistakes, fortunately on
a cheap bike, when I pretty much crunched that lower stays area where
they are mounted. Also learned to not over-tighten brake bolts on the
same bike, then learned some of the things not to do when you have a
two-foot long wrench hooked up to a freewheel remover (fortunately, I
was wearing boots or the shins would have been the first to go).

But fortunately the mother of a friend backed over it and I got to
start over...

Of the 1200 recumbents that I built I'd say that 1100 of the customers
ordered kick-stands. So I'd say that kickstands are as un-cool as it's
possible to be.

Hey -- back when I bought my bike at the LBS the hot babe who was selling it
to me looked at me like I was nuts when I mentioned a kickstand. So I don't
think it is a chick thing...or at least not for hot cycling babes 🙂

I do. I installed it a couple of years ago after picking
blackberries. I got fed up with lying my bike down as I
proceeded from one blackberry bush to the next.

I'm doing some temp labour work. I ride to the
office to sign up for work assignments. When I can
get to sites quickly via rapid transit, I just park
my bike in the office, lock the front wheel to the
frame, and deploy the kickstand (and rely on the
office staff to not let anyone monkey around with
my bike.) When I ride to job sites where I can
park indoors, the kickstand again comes in handy.

Maybe kickstands aren't so much of a chick thing as
a loaded touring thing. I think I've incorporated
some loaded touring style into my everyday riding.

I most of my bikes have one. Too damn practical to get rid of. In
fact, I'd like to find one of those kinds that mount near or on the
rear axle that lifts the rear wheel off the ground. It'd be great for
my work bike.
