  1. I can no longer shift my chain onto the larger of my two rings. I've
tried to adjust the derailleur but it doesn't have enough throw to
reach the larger one; no amount of adjusting the L or H screws will do
the trick. The total throw is only about 1/8" inch--nowhere near
enough of what is needed to move between the two rings (about 3/4" by
    my eye.)

There is very slight slack in the cable when it's shifted to the lower
ring. The bracket does not seem to have shifted on the frame (nor do
I see how this could affect total throw). I'm really confused--how
can the derailleur have had enough throw previously but does not now?

No instruction pages (including sheldonbrown.com nor parktool.com) on
front derailleur adjustment cover this situation of lack of sufficient
throw--they all just say "shift to the larger ring" before adjusting
the "H" screw, as if that's always possible.

    Thanks for any ideas,
    -Kurt

Your shift cable is too slack and needs to be tightened. The limit screws
you were adjusting are only meant to prevent the derailer from going past
the large and small chainrings, and dropping the chain. Your problem is
that the shifter is not pulling in enough cable to extend the derailer all
    the way.

Both Sheldons website and the Park website have instructions to tighten
the derailer cable. You will need to loosen the limit screws and readjust
them, if you have already done so.

Hi, can you get it to move farenough by hand? You should be able to
grab a hold of it and pull it out. If it moves far enough, that way,
then as the other poster suggested, it is a cable and/or shifter
    problem.

  4. Besides pulling slack out of the cable, pull the cable out of the
housing and look at it. It's amazing what 1-2 broken wire strands can do!

  5. The problem appears to be the shifter, not the derailleur.

Something has moved your crank to the right. Is the BB coming out of the
    frameset?

Since you say 'no longer', did it once work?

If the BB is okay, something is amiss with inner wire, housing or shifter.
