I dunno. OLCC (Kanuk OLN version) is right now thumping out 3.5 hours of
coverage of stage 20.

There must be a shortage of Mud-Wrestling and Fishing footage today

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but is this the first sign of
changes of the bicycling schedule at OLN because of Discovery Channel
picking up the title sponsorship of Postal?

The reality probably is that they couldn't line up the sponsors. Maybe
the told some of them, it's the TdF or nothin'.

I understand the fishing coverage, since fishing is the most popular

a clam on a #4 hook on 30lb line and tossed it into the Tittabawasee
River. Something bit and went up and down the river in front of me
while my line tangled up and I fought a very determined battle with the
line wrapped around my hands. After hearing the line sing through a few
passes, and I thought I'd be dragged into the river, the line went limp
and I retrieved a bent hook. I think it must have been the legendary 4
foot carp known as Atomic Bob)

Bullriding? Have you seen it? I almost hate to say it, but they've
struck gold. People can't drag their eyes from it. Aminal rights
groups must be livid.

Did something similar at Willard Bay many years ago. Saw the fish
splashing near the rocks on the shoreline, and wondered what I'd do with
it when I landed it. Then the lure came flashing by my head, with a
straightened hook.

Yes. Air time get's filled by cheaper sports when sponsors can't be found
for the more expensive sports. Cycling is tough because it is relatively
expensive when you consider how popular it is in the US. The owners of the
rights to broadcast have to establish value by shutting out those that can't
pay what they feel is a minimum. They do this in the hope that the pain of
missing it will increase the chances of finding the funds the next year. For
all you know it is a totally reasonable decision made by OLNTV. What if you
found out that the rights for the Vuelta broadcast in the US were something
like 80% of the cost of the Tour? The truth is you have no idea what
happened and whether it was a rational decision. It is not your style to
even think about what might have happened. Just whine like a baby.

You have to remember that any change that creates more opportunity for
revenue will also increase the cost. It is about margin. No profit margin,
no broadcast. Still, I think if they have the Giro and the Tour, there is
something to be said for taking a small hit on the Vuelta for the sake of
maintaining the position as the only network that brings every GT to their
audience. I think that has some value beyond the P&L for the event but it is
not my decision and I don't know any details. I trust that OLN is doing the
best they can while looking out for their owners and investors interests
short term and long term.
