I think this may be general, I tried to buy a Specialized Comp last week and
was told there is no stock at the factory and wont be until they start
making the new 2005 model in about Sep.

There has been a fairly well publicized shortage of Shimano components
and Chinese steel which was expected to hit bike supplies this summer

likely to be much difference in spec/price?

Yes. Its the start of August. At this time of year most mass
manufacturers are coming to the end of this years stock. When I used to
work in a LBS it got quite silly. If a manufacturer had a good year
stock would dry up in mid July and be impossible to get until the "new"
model started to arrive. One year in the mid 90's Saracen had some
really well priced mountain bikes and they were impossible to get in
most sizes before June was out.

I found the same when I bought mine a few years back. I waited for the end
of the season so I could get a cheaper bike, but they were selling out
fast. I think for many bikes it becomes hard to get hold of one, at least
in the popular sizes, around now.

That said, I'm sure I bought mine earlier in the year, March/April perhaps.
Maybe I'm not remembering it right.

Ridgeback seem to have supply problems. As I posted in a recent thread
the frame of my 21/2 year old Ridgeback K4 cracked. The LBS said they
would make warranty claim and get a replacement frame and swap the
bits over.
Latest update is that Ridgeback were unable to supply a frame due
to supply problems. LBS negotiated with them and I am told I will be
getting an entire new bike next week presumably from the LBS stock
with Ridgeback picking up the bill.
