I am new to the sport of cycling. I do quite a bit of cycling on the road and some on off-roads. I ride on some gravel and grass roads. Can I get some suggestions on an inexpensive bike ($200-500) that would be great serving both purposes? Is there anything I should look at in particular when looking at a new bike? Any and all of your suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!
You may want to check out some entry level mountain bikes since you do grass/off road, and pick up a set of slicks while you're at the store for your road days.

If you want a road bike I have three suggestions that are just a little out of your price range.
Giant OCR 3 Bianchi Brava Lemond Nevada City
All are great bikes and each has it's own distinct flavor. If you want your basic American style bike then go for the Giant. If you want something old school and European go for the Bianchi Brava. Lemond is a stylish American brand, obviously named for cycling great Greg Lemond. Each gives a great ride, each differant. Of course you could always go for a slightly sub-par brand like Schwinn. Schwinns are still decent bikes but they are getting to be more of a Toys-R-Us type brand. If you are just starting out that is a good choice too, and they fall in your price range. I myself am just getting my first road bike after mountain biking for several years. Those three I listed above are the three that I am looking at.
