  1. I am currently 14 years old (yeah I know some of you will laugh about that) but have started getting intrested in cycling. I started last year, a couple of months before my cross-country running season began, to start to get in shape. I have progressed to the point that now I would rather bike than run long distance(I am still a sprinter though) I have continued my new found hobby this year and am looking forward to getting a new bike, nothing to fancy mind you don't have that much money, also I will like some ideas to train for my age. and if anyone knows of any races in the midwest region of the US, preferabvly Wisconsin please let me know, it would be greatly appreciated. and now getting back to bikes, I currently have about $800 I can spend on a road bike. anything really would be an upgrade frommy cannondale, it is about 9 years old, and is a mountain bike. if it helps I am 5 foot 10 inces but don't know what my inseam is (whatever that is)

  2. Laugh? Hardly! 14 is a great age to start. In 10 years, you could be on the podium in Paris.

As far as bikes go, I'd guess that you'd fit a 56-57cm frame. At your price range, there are going to be some bikes available, but I'd suggest going shop-to-shop and looking for anything on sale or clearance. Some small bike shops mark down last year's models to get them out the door,

A few months ago, I bought my girlfriend a Lemond Reno for $850. Aluminum frame, carbon fork, Tiagra components, with a 105 rear derailleur. Definitely not a bad first bike for her!

So check around some shops, and see what's lying around. Don't forget to sit on several bikes, regardless of price, just to get an idea about how they fit. Good luck!

For $800 you can a good bike. Check with a couple of bike shops and test ride a few. Of course I understand this is a bad time to get a bike since cyclings popularity is at a high this close after the Tour. If you can wait you may get a deal on one since some people find it is not as easy as it looks on TV. To answer your question your inseam is the distance between the ground and your crotch. That reflects the standover height you need to clear the upper tube on a bike while standing flat footed whle stradling it.
Good luck on your new quest!

  4. thanks a lot you guys!!!!!!
