I'm following this year's event on TV and wonder if someone could answer a question regarding stage 18. At one point during the coverage it was noted that Armstrong was at the back of the pelaton because he took a "nature" break. Now I don't pretend to understand the nuances of road racing but why didn't Ullrich and some of the others riders in contention just take off?

Well it's poor sportsmanship for one, and for two, they never would have survived out front of the peloton for so long, USPS would have caught them pretty quickly

I think the sportsmanship issue is the big one. Generally, team leaders won't allow their teams to attack to take advantage of those kind of situations because they know that other teams would take advantage of it when they are at the disadvantage. This is in a similar vein to Armstrong sitting up and getting everyone else to sit up when Ullrich took that tumble a few years back, and Hamilton doing it when Armstrong got caught up with the spectator last year. Good karma still has a place in cycling, I guess :-D
