  1. I know you have the inside track at Trek. Any fallout from Greg's thrashing of
Lance? Is Lemond going to go the way of Rolf? Are we to see an 'Armstrong'
    frameset in 2005?

Not the first time that Lemond has taken pot-shots at Armstrong. A
couple of years ago the Lemond Bikes web site featured a 'sort-of'
apology on the main page in which Lemond said something to the effect
that his comments were taken out of context and that he had great
respect for LA. Given the recent comments I think the 'sort of
apology' of a couple of years back was forced on him by Trek
    management.

I had great admiration and respect for Lemond during his career.
Still do for what he did then. My reaction to his recent comments
fall out like this. Since he has made it clear he thinks LA is
doping, he either (a) has evidence that it is incumbent on him to
produce, or (b) he has a bad case of sour grapes and is trying to
resurrect his own reputation by smearing someone else. Either way,
since he has not produced any evidence, and continues the trash talk,
I have lost any respect for the present day Lemond.

Trek ditching the Lemond name would be no big deal. The current
iteration of Lemond bikes are so far away from anything he ever rode
or advocated that they could be called by any name (mine, yours, the
shipping clerk at Trek) and have just as close of an association with
    Lemond's racing career.

My own Lemond will get a repaint soon, not because I am trying to hide
the name but because the Trek paint job is so bad that it is flaking
off in sheets. Guess flake fits in more than one context.

I agree that Greg needs to put up or shut up. What I don't understand is
what is he trying to "resurrect"? Before this trash talking, Greg had, at
least to me a great reputation.

Paint aside, is this true? I thought, at least for the nice Reynolds steel
frames, that Lemond designed the geometry after his own philosophy, e.g.,
    long top tube.

Good question. I would say if Greg is making allegations that Lance is
doping, but fails to provide any "proof" verifying and showing that Lance is
actually doping, then Greg is talking trash.....

So until the someone confesses or tests positive, we shouldn't
    speculate about drugs in sport?

And how is he supposed to prove what Lance (alledgedly) told him on
the telephone? Is he supposed to be taping all his calls? If someone
phone him up and threatens LeMond, is he not supposed to say anything
w/o the tape, because then it is trash?

    Brilliant.

It's trash if it's not true. It's not trash if it is true. The
ability to prove it doesn't make it one or the other.

Speculation is one thing, repeated outright accusations without
    proof is another thing entirely.

What were his accusations? Did you read the article in Le Monde or
watch any of the interviews with him. What he said seemed very
reasonable to me. But I haven't read/heard everythign he said. What
outright accusations did he make? Please quote one if it's online or
paraphrase it if you just heard it on TV.

I think that great care should be taken. While it can be
proven that someone was taking drugs, it is impossible to
prove that they are not. So, any allegation will forever
taint someone's reputation. That should not be taken lightly.

The one that sticks in my mind was when he said "...There's no way
he (Armstrong) could maintain this level of performance for so
    long without doping"

I'll try to dig up an attribution for that.

    Dear Stef,

This sounds a bit like what you have in mind:

The French newspaper Le Monde, which has previously leveled
doping allegations at Armstrong, on Thursday ran an
interview with three-time Tour winner Greg LeMond who
suggested he doubts that his fellow American is drug-free.

"Lance is ready to do anything to keep his secret," LeMond
was quoted as saying. "I don't know how he can continue to
    convince everybody of his innocence."

What 'nice ... steel frames'? Have you looked through their offerings
    lately? Aluminum+carbon, titanium+carbon, steel+carbon. They have
a couple of steel framed bikes, but nothing to get excited about. And
most of the newer bikes have relatively short effective top tubes.
Like I said, nothing you could associate with the Lemond name of old.

Thanks. A few years ago, a friend of mine bought a very nice tigged welded
Lemond made out of Reynolds 853 that was very reasonably priced. Yes, it
wasn't lugged, but it was steel and had a long top tube (something those of
us with long torsos/short legs need).

Its too bad that lemond stopped making those frames!

  15. I've always considered Greg as a bit arrogant. He was a great rider,
don't get me wrong, but somewhat self centered, as when he whined about
Hinault "hogging all the glory" (Hinault was still Team Captain at the
    time.

Lance has a great team that would probably ride off a cliff en masse if
they thought it would help him win, and I wouldn't doubt Greg is more
than a bit jealous of the fact.

I almost bought a steel lemond in 2003. I was very impressed with the
ride but never could get over how much the frame looked like a
department store huffy from when i was a kid. I got a Klein insted. It
just didn't have the WOW effect on the showroom floor. I still may
    find one on ebay.

Interesting. Did you pay alot more for that *WOW* effect?

  18. Any idea how one would unpaint an '03 Arrivee? I've already got some
chips, and assume that it will continue to worsen. I'm guessing that
a chemical strip would be fine on the titanium, but what about the
    carbon fiber fork?
