We used to race our BMX bikes around the neighborhood when I was
little. That was fun--full-blown, single-speed sprints. I haven't
got the legs or the lungs to do that competitively.
I only became a road rider, really, much more recently.
What we did do was ride jumps and drops. "betcha can't ride that" is
a hell of a game: down stairs. Down into construction sites. Up
kerbs. off ramps. Curbsurfing (hop the curb with your front wheel,
drag the sidewall along the face of the curb, hop off).
Pretty tame by today's freestyle BMX standards, I admit. But fun.
(Totally tangentially: I find its' hard to do any of that with my
present bike, probably because it's much bigger. I could probably
chuck around a bike that was technically too small for me, but on a
"decently" sized bike, I find it hard to jump or trackstand or any of
it. Probably a combination of lack of practice and different bike
setup)

bike in 10 or 20 years. I hope to have a fusion of both, and can
imagine riding in a group in a few years, and maybe entering a race in
5-10 years from now with a lot more training; but I like to 'fake' it
even riding by myself.
Mind you, I'm not saying that competitive people don't ride forever,
either. I know a guy who used to race professionally and is into his
second career as a high school teacher. He commutes to school every
morning, riding hard. He still likes riding.
Quoted message said:Right now, my sprints are against cars whom I intuit are going to
right hook me from behind. I've intuited quite a few of them, but they
still persist in this passive-aggressive stuff - one person riding
much too close around a bend to the left, no other cars on the rode -
I could have touched the car. Oddly, I could have found the person
since they were driving into a dead end section of a housing
development. Just was too busy enjoying myself to get mad as I prob.
should have. ;-P
I always love the look of surprise that I get from motorists who think
they're going to cut me off when they find me level with them and
pulling away in a flat. That doesn't last, of course, since if they
had to slow down for traffic, I have to slow down, too, or risk
rear-ending some poor [censored].
