You shouldn't have a problem getting the sensor close enough to the spokes. You do need to place the sensor on the left (non-driveside) chain stay though. The right side spokes are dished and are too far away from the chain stay. As you get closer to the dropouts the spokes get closer to the frame.
I just purchased a 2004 Giant TCR Composite 2 with the Shimano R-540 aero wheelset and I am having problems fitting a bike computer.
I would like to get a computer with cadence and a rear speed sensor so I could use it on my stationary trainer but cannot find one to fit.
I tried the Cateye Astrale 8 but the speed sensor on the chainstay was too far from the spoke.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it work or another computer that would work?
If (as another poster recommended) moving it back towards the hub, on the non-drive side doesn't help, there are a couple of other options. See if different magnets stick out more--I had a batch of cheap computers I bought from Ebay that used a longer magnet to get close enough to a sensor mounted against the stay. The other option that I can think of off the top of my head is to get a longer screw and a bit of rigid tubing or such to allow you to mount the sensor closer.

Also, do rear wheel sensors work with disc wheels?
