trials: Onza or KH

This is roughly the seventy billionth thread on this topic. Please do a
search beforehand.
However, that search will result in you finding that the KH is stronger,
but the Onza is considerably prettier. So it depends what you want in
your unicycle.

I chose 'other':

I would prefer a cutom unicycle with some parts from either of them but
a custom made frame and completely different pedals. Custom unis are
the best (or at least they can be).

i have slightly bent my right crank. the problem is that the new onza
is only 8 months old (is that right?) so no one has ridden long enough
to really test its strength. i ride a good bit and i have punished it
thoroughly, yet it still does its job. i dont think you would be
disapointed with the onza, but with the kh you know what you are getting
is good. im excited about the new kh!

I was just wondering about that comment because I've heard of plenty of
people bending (never breaking though) their KH cranks including me (for
two sets now 🙁) and never for the new (or old) Onza cranks. Well,
other than muniracer's onza crank which I just read about then.

Lots of drops in the 4-6' range, one 7', but the one that did the most
damage was about a 4' drop to flat dirt with a really uncoordinated
landing. They only bent when I landed poorly. If I manage a nice
smooth roll out they hold up fine to my biggest drops.

I do not think that the KH is stronger then the ONZA. I have heared and
saw many bent or broken KH-cranks, but I only heared of a few bent ONZA
cranks.
And the KH is 8 splined, the ONZA is 48 splined....

I would prefer ONZA!!!

other for me has ment a bedford triales with the kh crank. as a 185
pounder regularly dropping up to 4' my kh crank has held up super well.
i'll expect the same from my new uni.

I think it is 36 splined, but still 🙂

I'm wondering, will this site become useless between the releases of new
unis? Surely everyone will just be pointed to past threads!

I've heard and had Onza hub problems, but that's sorted now. Heard of
battered Onza cranks becoming near impossible to remove too. Seem to be
very strong though.

Heard several reports of KH cranks bending, tho my 170s are still
perfect. It may be heavier than the Onza. I know the whole uni is
lighter.

My right Onza crank is slightly bent, but not that much. The problem is
that the biggest drop to flat I've ever done on it was about 4', so I'm
not exactly thrashing it. Lots more static 2-3 footers. Oh yeah, and the
occasionaly 6-8 set of stairs... But those have nice rollouts. The
bigger problem with the Onza is not it's strength, but those damn
dustcaps and replacement parts. There are two extremes. On one hand, you
ave an untouched dustcap and it fall out, and you can't replace it, and
on the other hand you have a thrashed dustcap from pedal and crankgrabs.
IT won't come out and seizes the bolt so the crank can't be maintained.
Part of the problem with the KH is that it's more popular and has more
riders, so of course the best riders will ride it and bend and break it,
while mediocre Joe (referring to me) over here gets an Onza and does
less damage to it, thus making it appear to be stronger. Also, the KH
right now has cranks that aren't ideal for resisting bending forces
because of the shape, while the Onza is better suited to this task.
Also, i have heard of the old Onza being plain snapped off like what
Dylan Wallinger did to his profiles.

Really, the thing to do is to stop comparing Onza and KH and get
profiles until the new KH hub and crankset comes out. The extra money
will be worth it. Both the Onza and the KH make scary creaky noises and
get bits of play in them, while profiles are rock solid. Mine on my
muni, after some 7' drops to rollout, still don't have play or creak.

If you want more info on the new KH do a search...

The Onza is 40 splined, not 36 or 48. The new KH will be 36 splined.

Splined is in reference to the little ribs on the outside of the axle
and inside of the crank. If I have an 8 spline crank it has 8 little
ribs on the inside. The Onza has 40 little ribs. The KH has 8, and
Profiles have 48 (normal and SS), and the profile dirtjumpers have
something like 96... Not worth your money, super heavy and super
expensive, and the normal profiles will be adaquate for just about
everyone. Not to mention, can you imagine getting the cranks on straight
if you have 96 splines?! If the Onza is bad, dirtjumpers are impossible!

most of the profiles i've heard seem to have that annoying creak with
bits of play. enough to not be impressive. i've kept my kh well
maintained and have no noise or play. maybe that's true for the profiles
as well. that being said, if i were to drop from higher more often then
i would probably go profile.

i would then say that the real question is: regular drops under four -
any splined would do. regular drops over four - profile. both with
regular and immediate maintenance.

I have the old Onza. Last I checked both were 40 splined.

As for the Profiles, I maintain bith splined setups very well.
Everything is anti-seized and all that, and I even carry wrenches to
tichten the stuff on rides. I find that with that in mind, the profiles
are nicer to ride.
