  1. Over in rec.bicycles.rides I posted a trip report for my recent ride
from Blue Diamond out to Red Rocks in the Las Vegas area.

This morning, I rode to work in a light rain that turned to a heavy
mist as I got closer to the Sound. You know, I love the Pacific
    Northwest.

    Warm Regards,

I rode up the Left Coast one summer, and spent five days in Washington
in a near-continual downpour. One day I had to stop because it was
raining so hard I couldn't see. By the time I reached Port Angeles, my
    chain was rusted.

Yes, the Pacific Northwest is a lovely place, but sometimes it can be a
bit too wet for my liking.

On Friday, I was riding from work to a barbecue/picnic, up at Golden Gardens
State Park. It was 55 degrees and lightly raining. I bought a 7 pound salmon
at the Pike Place Market, and had strapped it on to my rack, along with the
marinade, with a bungee cord. As I rode through Myrtle Edwards Park, right
along the waterfront, I felt very Northwest-y: rain, cool day in mid-July,
water lapping against the shore, ships are moving in and out of the harbor,
big salmon strapped on the back of the bike, headed for a picnic that no one
would think of canceling just because of a little precipitation.

The blackberries are already starting to ripen.

I'm not usually much of a dessert person, but warm blackberry
compote poured over a big, fluffy dumpling and topped with a
scoop of ice cream can be a toothsome delight. Heck, it can
    almost be a main course.

    cheers,
    Tom

Lucky you: here in Las Vegas on Friday it was 103F, and you can believe
me when I say my ride home from work was no picnic, although it was
    somewhat like a barbecue.

I haven't been feeling the need for any desserts lately. I've been
gorging on the Rainier and Bing cherries available very cheaply at
my local asian grocer. I think last time I popped down there on the
bike I picked up 6 pounds of Bings and 4 pounds of Rainiers. I
haven't managed to make them into anything, because they are just so
    good by themselves.
