Duffield has retired for health reasons. On British Eurosport this
year it's Mike Smith with Kelly and the ever excellent Kristy
Anderson.

I like Al. I'm used to his authoritative, voice of reason during the
NBC Ironman broadcasts. He adds an air of respect and admiration
to the narrative. He appeals to the mass audiences, when Bob,
Paul, Phil, Kirsten, Sam, and Frankie might leave them unsure
of what is happening.

On the other hand, yesterday's Phil Liggett quote of the day:

I generally like Trautwig, especially in comparision to others who have been in
that "set-up" role. One thing that really bugged me, though, in the one-hour
TdF "preview" show was his (I think it was his, and not Sam Posey's) statement
to the effect that "it took 30 years [after Merckx] to produce another great
champion," Lance, of that caliber.

Hello? Lance has been a great TdF rider, but he's no Bernard Hinault, even if
he wins six, and he's probably no Miguel Indurain, either, at least until he
wins a couple of Giros. Sheesh. The fawning is just too much to swallow
sometimes.

blinders on, which obstruct from view accomplishments by non-americans.
You'd think they'd give him a pile of Tour history stuff to go through
and maybe tape delay his foot-in-mouth comments.

I rate Lance better than Indurain motsly because I don't pay much attention
to any of the results from about '92 on because EPO became so commonly used
that none of the results reflected who was the best rider. Charly Mottet was
gangbusters good but always was washed out at the end of a race where people
like Mr. 60% (we won't say his name but he was a Swiss wasn't he?) were
supposed to be heros.

They called Miguel the Extraterrestrial. To tell you the truth I don't know
what to believe about him. It would be nice to know that he was really clean
but how could you ever know?

I haven't been taping the pre-race shows, after I saw it before the
prologue. It was just one big Lanceathon, and I wasn't impressed with Earwig
either. And also, I save a half-hour of tape. Those things tend to be a
waste of space!

I saw Al at the finish of the Fleche Wallone race. He was filming a
short "fluff" sound bite. He and his crew were standing right in the
middle of the narrow walk way, while Al taped the same piece about
five times, before getting the results that he was looking for. He
kept flubbing his lines, so he had to keep on doing re-takes.

I just hate all of the hystrionics that these fluff pieces give. The
heck with the masses....why do we always have to cow-tow to the lowest
common denomonitor and dumb down the race? You know if Lance wasn't in
the TDF, not a whole lot of "masses" would be watching the broadcast.

And finally, what is this crud, showing the race mileage in miles on
the TV screen while the race is going on? I know that it also shows up
as kilometers, at other times, but talk about dumbing it down for
people who don't know, or can't figure out the metric system! I
noticed that Phil is also doing the conversion while talikng about the
race.

That last statement is exactly the point. Lance gets people to watch.
Fluff pieces explain the race to the "lowest common denominator" so they can
understand what's going on. If all goes well, then when Lance retires after
2005, OLN's viewership for the Tour does not drop dramatically because the
masses get it and decide to keep coming back.
