like before the purchase would be the time to find out they stink;-) ...

I am a beginner, and didn't see a reason to spend $2500+ on something, I
might not have the condition to achieve in. If this one does well, and I
like racing, I'll get a better bike later, is the plan. Thanks for the
insight, it did help.

What these grumpy people meant is that for TECH you go to the TECH
forum. This is the RACING forum, wich is talking more about the sport as
about the TECH. (I actually made a similar mistake yesterday)

About the R600: Don't let those grognards discourage you. The R600 frame
was a few years ago the basis of the Profesional Cannondale frame. This
is a frame you can use for years to come... if you upgrade to the best
components in the world... your frame will be worth it. So for a starter
the R600 is one of the best bikes around... as a frame it can compete
with the best Alu frames on the market.

No argument there. Let's just make sure we are talking apples and apples.
You can get CAAD5 in a mountain bike. The geometry and configuration of the
tubing also play into whether the 2004 R600 is identical to the
then-state-of-the-art CAAD5 pro road race frame back in 2000 or 2001 or
whatever.

Saeco's CAAD5s were custom made but of the same frame tubing w/Slice fork
that you would find on a Cannondale off the shelf. If you go to Super
Mario's web site there are some photos of him riding pre-CAAD5 frames.
IIRC, one of the reasons the CAAD5's hourglass rear stays were developed was
due to input from Saeco riders seeking to smooth out the ride. My two year
old CAAD5 was identical to those ridden by 7Up/Nutra Fig except that they
were custom made. That comes from a discussion with a Northampton, MA
Cannondale dealer who had frequent contact with Kevin Monahan. Saeco got the
CAAD6 &7 upgrades before 7Up as 7Up was using standard bb Ritchey cranks.
The CAAD5 frame today is made with the same tubing as before but is being
supplanted by the newer Optimo framesets. You can order just the CAAD5
frame if you like. Good value. Get'em while you still can.

What's the difference between the CAAD5 and the CAAD4. I have an older CAAD4
R600. I'll upgrade when I am a better rider and can afford it, but it has
suited me fine up 'til now.

Nothing can beat the ride quality and feel of a really nice Italian
steel frame.

With a nice well built carbon or ti frame not far behind .......... :-P
